Beyond Migration: Unlocking Australia's Hidden Talent

Australia has one of the world's most highly educated migrant populations, yet too much of that talent remains underutilised. Why do skilled migrants struggle to have their qualifications recognised? Why do many migrant women face barriers to workforce participation? And how do these challenges—and opportunities—shape the lives of their Australian-born children and future generations?

In this extended episode of Deep Dive, we draw on OECD research to explore the economics of skilled migration, human capital, regional development and productivity. We examine why Australia's cities attract talent, why regional areas struggle to retain it, how credential recognition affects careers, and how the experiences of migrant families continue across generations. We also explore the unique opportunities and challenges faced by the children of migrants born in Australia, and the important role they play in Australia's economic, social and cultural future.

Rather than viewing migration through a political lens, this episode examines it through evidence, economics and long-term national prosperity. Join us as we unpack the structural barriers, policy challenges and opportunities that could help Australia unlock the full potential of one of its greatest assets—its people.
