The Odyssey, Episode 10: Made Young Again | Mythical Sleep Story

Tonight's episode is the one this whole series has been walking toward since Episode 1 — a father and son finally standing in the same room, and neither one sure at first whether to believe it. There's something in that moment almost everyone recognizes: the fear that comes right alongside relief, the reflex to doubt good news because you've been disappointed so many times before. Has there ever been someone in your own life you almost didn't let yourself believe was really back?

This is a sleep story continuing an abridged narration of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 translation, told as a bedtime series for adults who want something old, absorbing, and calming to fall asleep to.

Episode 10 covers Book XVI of the Odyssey: Telemachus returns from his journey to Pylos and Sparta to find the disguised beggar — his own father, Odysseus — waiting in the swineherd Eumaeus's hut. Athena appears and transforms Odysseus back into his true form, and father and son reunite after twenty years apart. The two begin plotting against the suitors occupying the household, while on Ithaca, the suitors debate murdering Telemachus after their ambush fails, and Penelope confronts Antinous over the plot.

What's covered in this video:

- The reunion opens with Eumaeus's overwhelming joy at Telemachus's safe return, setting the emotional tone before the real reveal.

- Athena's transformation of Odysseus from an old beggar into his true, youthful form is narrated as a moment of quiet awe.

- The father-son recognition scene explores disbelief, grief held too long, and the relief of finally being believed.

- The middle section covers the two men's private planning against the suitors, including the secrecy Odysseus asks of his son.

- The suitors' failed ambush and council explore Antinous's murder plot and Amphinomus's restraint.

- Penelope's confrontation with Antinous closes the episode's tension before returning to the quiet of Eumaeus's hut at nightfall.
