Fall Asleep to The Caves Almost No One Is Allowed to Enter

In 1948, Lascaux Cave in southwestern France was opened to the public. The paintings inside — horses, aurochs, deer, rendered in ochre and charcoal seventeen thousand years ago with a sophistication that still startles — had survived every climate event of the Holocene in sealed darkness. Within seven years, the carbon dioxide and humidity from 1,200 daily visitors had produced green algae on the walls and calcite deposits over the pigments. By 1963, the cave was closed. It has never reopened. What seventeen thousand years of sealed darkness preserved, fifteen years of human breath began to destroy.

Tonight we sit with six caves that are restricted not to keep people safe from the caves, but to keep the caves safe from people. Chauvet, whose paintings at 36,000 years old are more than twice the age of Lascaux — lions, rhinoceroses, mammoths rendered with shading and perspective, alongside the footprints of a child walking beside a wolf or early dog, preserved in clay for 26,000 years. The French government, learning from Lascaux, never opened Chauvet to the public. Fewer than a few hundred people have ever been inside. Movile Cave in Romania, sealed from the surface for an estimated 5.5 million years, containing a complete ecosystem of 48 species — 35 found nowhere else on Earth — blind, pale, sustained by chemosynthetic bacteria in an atmosphere of hydrogen sulfide and methane that would kill any surface organism. Fewer than 100 people have entered it. Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico, over 240 kilometers of surveyed passage containing gypsum chandeliers, selenite needles six meters long, and microbial communities with natural antibiotic resistance that predates human medicine by millions of years. Son Doong in Vietnam, the largest known cave passage in the world — over 200 meters high, with its own clouds, its own weather system, and two collapsed ceiling sections where full jungle has grown inside the cave, lit by natural skylights from above.

And beneath a mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, at 300 meters depth, a chamber containing the largest natural crystals ever found on Earth — selenite beams up to 12 meters long and 55 tons, grown over 500,000 years in water at 58 degrees Celsius. The chamber is lethal — the heat and humidity would kill an unprotected person in ten minutes. Researchers entered in modified ice-cooled suits for visits measured in minutes. In 2015, the mine reduced its pumping. The water began to return. The crystals are re-submerging — going back under, returning to the dark hot water that grew them, closing the parenthesis that human access opened for roughly fifteen years in the middle of a geological sentence half a million years long.

Let the water rise. Let the crystals go back under. Let the caves rest in the conditions that made them — sealed, dark, stable, growing at rates measured in millimeters per millennium. The paintings are in the dark. The blind spiders are hunting by vibration. The chandeliers are intact. The clouds are forming inside the mountain. The crystals are patient. Rest the way they rest — slowly, in stable conditions, without urgency. Sleep
