The 5-Minute Football Coach - Ep.93 - OL

In this episode of The 5 Minute Football Coach, we get into offensive-line coaching and the balance between technique and physicality. Technique is critically important, but players can become so focused on their feet, hands and body position that they stop reacting and playing naturally. The answer is progression: teach the technique, teach players how to use it at speed, introduce contact, and eventually put them against opponents who have to make decisions. Good O-line coaching isn't just about knowing the technique — it's about teaching players how to let that technique flow when they play football.

Episode Summary

Offensive line play is about working together in close quarters, being physical, and developing a particular mindset and pride in the work. The coaching of the O-line has increasingly focused on technique to the point where players can sometimes become so concerned with how they are moving that they lose the ability to simply play.

Technique is critically important, but it isn't the end of the progression. Players need to learn how to use that technique at speed, against contact, and eventually against an opponent who is making decisions. The practice progression should therefore move from teaching the details, to allowing players to let those techniques flow, to putting them into situations where they have to actually play football.

Key Takeaways

  • Offensive line play is built around five players working together in a tight, physical environment.
  • Technique is extremely important — but technique shouldn't become the entire focus of O-line coaching.
  • Players can become so focused on their feet, hands and body position that they stop seeing and reacting.
  • Practice should progress from teaching technique to using technique at speed.
  • Sled work can give players an opportunity to be physical and let their techniques flow without constantly thinking about every detail.
  • The physicality of offensive line play is something that can get lost when coaching becomes overly technical.
