Some companies hand shareholders extra shares every year instead of raising the cash dividend, and it looks like free money. It isn't. In this video, I break down what a stock dividend actually is, why your broker records it as a stock split, and why selling those bonus shares to create a higher "yield" is really just a withdrawal from your own account. We look at what happens to the share price the morning after, and check the one number that settles the argument: 20-year total return with dividends reinvested, measured against the S&P 500.
