SHRINK CHAT: Ted Bundy's Trial, Carole Ann Boone & Cursed Films

Ted Bundy was offered a deal that would have taken the electric chair off the table. He turned it down at the last moment, because accepting meant standing up in front of the world and saying he was guilty. Part seven of the Ted Bundy reboot is the trial, and the vanity that decided it.

CONTENT WARNING: murder, sexual violence, bite mark evidence, the murder of a twelve-year-old girl, and capital punishment.

THE EPISODE

The trial is where Bundy stopped being able to hide, and Cathy and Shannon are more interested in the vanity than the verdict. He fired five court appointed attorneys. He represented himself. He wore a Houston Astros shirt under a blazer and smiled at the cameras. And he was handed a plea deal that would have spared his life, which he had already worked out how to exploit, planning to let the evidence rot and the witnesses scatter before moving to set the pleas aside.

He rejected it in the room, because taking it meant admitting the court was right. His own public defender said it plainly: he would have had to stand up in front of the whole world and say he was guilty, and he could not do it.

Shannon and Cathy use that moment for the clearest distinction they have drawn in this series. A psychopath does not need to be liked as long as he gets away with it. A sociopath needs the reputation, and that need is what put Bundy in the chair.

CORRECTIONS

The third case in the plea offer was Kimberly Leach, not a woman attacked in an apartment. The woman attacked in her apartment after Chi Omega was Cheryl Thomas, and she survived. Bundy was arrested in February 1978; the Chi Omega trial opened in June 1979. The Leach death sentence was handed down on February 12 1980. And Bundy was not among the last to die in Old Sparky, which Florida continued to use into 1999.
