TCF Ep. 665 - Emilia Martin

When artist and photographer Emilia Martin began exploring the stories passed down through her Polish family, she became increasingly interested in the ways history is constructed, preserved, and forgotten. Working across photography, writing, sound, and sculpture, Emilia uses multiple forms of artistic expression to explore the relationship between memory, heritage, and the stories we inherit. Growing up between her grandmother's remote farm in rural eastern Poland and the industrial coal-mining region of Silesia, Emilia experienced two very different relationships to land, labor, history, and belonging. Those contrasting environments became a foundation for her artistic practice, which draws on oral histories, myths, rituals, and objects as forms of archives and systems of knowledge. Her work also embraces absence—those fragments of cultural history that have been dismissed, forgotten, or lost—and asks what might emerge when we acknowledge that some stories can never be fully recovered. Rather than limiting herself to a single medium, Emilia allows the ideas she wants to explore and communicate to determine how she makes the work, moving freely between photography, writing, sound, and sculpture.
