Radiation or Medieval Forgery?

In this episode of The Backstory on the Shroud of Turin, Guy R. Powell welcomes Dale Glover of Real Seekers. Rather than a standard interview, this conversation reviews a major debate between Gary Habermas and Shroud skeptic Hugh Farey.

Guy and Dale examine several questions surrounding the Shroud’s image. Could radiation help explain visible teeth and possible hand bones? What does microscopic superficiality tell us? Why does the image lack ordinary two-dimensional directionality? They also discuss vertical collimation and the similar image density on the cloth’s front and back.

The discussion then turns to history. Farey argues that the Shroud lacks secure provenance before the fourteenth century. Guy and Dale examine the d’Arcis memorandum, papal letters, and medieval exhibition practices.

They also explore the Quem Quaeritis ritual. Medieval churches used ceremonial burial cloths during Easter observances. However, Dale notes that documented examples are not known to contain comparable body images.

Jewish burial customs become another major topic. The conversation considers burial haste, blood, linen, spices, and possible exceptions to standard practice.

Later, Guy and Dale evaluate a painted-image theory. Could pigment have been applied and later washed away? Dale questions whether the remaining microscopic evidence fits that explanation.

The episode also covers neutron radiation claims, nitrogen levels, radiocarbon dating implications, and competing scientific interpretations. Throughout the discussion, the speakers distinguish between evidence, hypotheses, and unresolved questions.

For listeners interested in Jesus Christ, the Resurrection, and the Shroud of Turin, this episode offers a focused point-counterpoint review. It also complements Guy Powell’s book, The Only Witness: A History of the Shroud of Turin.
