The Murder of Janette Wilton

The episode details the 2003 cold case investigation of Janette Wilton, a Michigan mother and grandmother who was sexually assaulted and murdered in her home before her body was dumped in a river. Despite accumulating massive case files, numerous suspect interviews, and DNA samples over two decades, local law enforcement authorities were initially unable to solve the heinous crime. A major breakthrough finally occurred in 2022 when the Michigan State Police collaborated with a cold case program at Western Michigan University and genetic genealogy experts at Othram Studios to analyze preserved single-source male DNA. Through advanced genome sequencing and family tree construction, investigators identified Jason Cabello, a former relative by marriage who lived nearby, as the perpetrator. Although Cabello maintained his innocence during questioning and ultimately entered a no contest plea rather than admitting full guilt, he was successfully convicted and sentenced to prison. Ultimately, the narrative highlights how modern DNA technology and university partnerships can successfully revive dormant investigations and bring long-awaited justice to grieving families.
