Sarah’s Thoughts: You Don’t Have to Like Everyone in Your Family

Here’s something we’re rarely told about family: you can love someone, care about them and still not particularly like them.

Or the family member who always seems to know exactly which button to push. Often, the frustration isn’t just about who they are — it’s about who you keep hoping they’ll eventually become.

Sarah shares three practical ways to protect your peace: lower your expectations without lowering your standards, decide your boundaries before you see them, and stop taking the bait when familiar comments inevitably come.

Because acceptance doesn’t mean approving of someone’s behaviour. It means recognising what they are capable of giving you — and choosing your response accordingly.

You don’t have to defend every decision. You don’t have to correct every opinion. And you certainly don’t have to hand over your peace simply because someone is family.

You may not get to choose your family, but you absolutely get to choose how much access they have to you.
