Fall Asleep to The Patterson–Gimlin Film Mystery

Fall Asleep to The Patterson–Gimlin Film Mystery

In October 1967, a rodeo cowboy and a rancher rode horses into a remote creek bed in northern California's Six Rivers National Forest. Roger Patterson carried a rented 16mm camera loaded with Kodachrome film. What his camera recorded over the next fifty-nine and a half seconds would become the most scrutinized piece of amateur footage in history — and nearly sixty years later, the world's best analysts still cannot agree on what it shows.

Tonight you walk into the Bluff Creek drainage, deep in the old-growth Douglas fir and tanoak of the Klamath Mountains. You meet the two men who were there — Patterson, the complicated dreamer with a borrowed camera and a terminal diagnosis he didn't yet know about, and Gimlin, the quiet rancher who came along as a favor and never changed his story. You move through the film frame by frame, watching what the celluloid actually recorded: a bipedal figure crossing the creek bed, turning once to look back, and walking into the trees. Then you sit with the forensic arguments that have raged ever since — biomechanics researchers who say the gait cannot be replicated in a costume, effects artists who say it can, and a stalemate that has outlasted everyone's patience except the forest's.

The creek bed has shifted since 1967. Floods and forest succession have reshaped the banks where the figure walked. But the old-growth trees that witnessed the filming are still standing, still silent, adding another ring each year while the debate continues without them. Somewhere in an archive, a strip of Kodachrome holds its fifty-nine seconds of afternoon light, and the question it carries remains, after all these years, unanswered.
