S4E1 - The Sibling Effect

S4E1 - The Sibling Effect

We grow up with our siblings, fight with them, learn from them, compete with them, and sometimes rely on them more than anyone else. But how much of who we become can really be explained by something as simple as birth order? In this episode, we take a closer look at what the research actually says about birth order—and discover that the familiar stereotypes about oldest, middle, and youngest children may not be nearly as reliable as we think.

More importantly, we explore what does shape us in our sibling relationships: parental differential treatment, family roles, sibling conflict and support, parentification, triangulation, and the larger family systems we grow up within. We also look at how childhood sibling dynamics can follow us into adulthood, including rivalry, resentment, estrangement, grief, and the possibility of relationships that grow and heal over time. Whether you grew up as the responsible one, the peacemaker, the scapegoat, the invisible child, or something else entirely, your family role may have shaped you in ways that reach far beyond childhood.
