Dean Graham Put On His Hi-Vis Vest That Friday. It Was Under a Road.

Dean Graham Put On His Hi-Vis Vest That Friday. It Was Under a Road.

At six every morning, Dean Graham pulled an orange safety vest over his jacket before he walked four and two tenths miles, because part of his route ran along Route Nine with no sidewalk. His neighbor set his own watch by the sound of Dean's door. One Friday in November of twenty twelve the door closed as usual, and Dean never came back. Eleven years later a surveyor clearing leaves from a culvert on that same road found his watch face up, with the crown pulled out.

Dean Graham, fifty-four, was a civil engineer with twenty-two years at an engineering firm called Alderman Cross, living alone in Calloway County. He was last seen on the morning of Friday, November ninth, twenty twelve, and his daughter Megan reported him missing the following Thursday. That September he had filed a formal complaint with the county board over approved towing contractors, against Edward Johnson of Route Nine Towing, over a charge in his name for a service call he said he had never requested. A hearing was scheduled for December; Dean did not live to attend it. The first investigation found no physical evidence and gradually lost its leads. On November seventh, twenty twenty-three, a county surveyor found Dean's watch inside a culvert at mile marker fourteen, and Dean's own repair receipt matched the serial number. His remains were recovered from a utility trench beneath an April twenty thirteen emergency road repair, a section Johnson had signed for access to prepare; the examination documented injuries consistent with violence. A second victim, Patricia Dewhurst, who had disappeared in September of twenty thirteen, was recovered in December of twenty twenty-three. Edward Johnson was arrested on March fourteenth, twenty twenty-four, and ten days later, with counsel present, gave a recorded statement admitting both killings. At trial in twenty twenty-five the defense challenged the confession and the informant testimony. After six hours of deliberation the jury returned guilty verdicts for both murders, and Johnson received two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The convictions did not answer everything about either person's final hours.
