Kelly Fleming's Sister Printed Flyers for Years. She Was in Unit Seven.

Kelly Fleming rebuilt the way her hospital admitted patients. She sat with the staff doing the work, marked every question that got asked twice, tested a shorter version, and kept the drafts in a folder on the server. On a Wednesday night in August 2014 she called her sister at the usual hour, mentioned work, said she was tired and said goodnight. She never called again. Three years later a county surveyor noticed that one padlock on a row of storage units had no rust on it.

---

Kelly Fleming was 28, an admissions coordinator at Callaway Regional Medical Center. A colleague saw her near the hospital loading area at about 6:20 p.m. on 14 August 2014; her phone last connected at 6:42 that evening and her silver Honda Accord stayed in the lot. On 4 October 2017 her remains were found in unit seven at Eastgate Self Storage, identified by dental records, with the temporary hospital photo pass issued to her on the day she vanished lying beside her. The medical examiner recorded neck injuries consistent with compression and could not establish a time of death. Kimberly Smith, 34, was Kelly's supervisor: promoted six weeks before the disappearance in significant part on the strength of the intake system Kelly designed, and the subject of a written complaint from her about who had designed it. In a recorded interview in December 2017 Smith admitted renting the Eastgate unit in 2012 under the name Jay Carlyle, paying eight months of rent eleven days before Kelly disappeared, arranging a 6:30 meeting by email, hiring a van, and killing Kelly. She was convicted of murder in 2018 and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. In 2020 she was charged with the 2013 murder of Patricia Dunn, 31, a billing specialist found in a drainage culvert outside Ferris. Smith pleaded not guilty; her lawyers dispute the reading of the partial DNA profile recovered from the unit's door rail, and no confession covers that case. The charge was still pending when this account closes.

---

This is a fictional case. The people, institutions and investigation are invented. The episode follows the records it builds: the hospital badge and appointment files, the storage lease and ledger, the van rental agreement, phone and bank records, laboratory findings, a recorded interview and the trial testimony.
