Scott Sharick | It’s Never Too Late to Bike Tour + Tips for Cycling in Bangladesh

In episode 004 of Bike Tour Adventures, I interview Scott Sharick, an American that decided to quit his job and cycle around the world after suffering a stroke. His views on life, love of cycling, and immersion into local cultures will surely keep you entertained.

I first met Scott while on my short tour of Norther Thailand, through Adam and Lucia. It was cool to see someone that is not a young 20-something doing a multi-year tour of the world. At first, I didn’t give it that much thought, as I had no intention of doing a podcast or any other type of thing, but then ended up checking out his facebook, and his blog, and while reading it, I came to see and appreciate Scott, as he has the uncanny ability to capture people with his camera.

There are two types of bike tourers. Those that bike because they love biking and those that use it a means of getting from A to B. Scott is the latter variety, having been a cyclist all his life, and conveniently using it as a means of achieve his goal of going around the world and seeing everything it has to offer. Having previously cycled across the United States when in his 20s, both East-West and North-South, he somehow never took it to the level of doing a world tour.

After working a career in the medical field in various locations throughout the world, Scott suffered a stroke. Fortunately he was able to make a full recovery. This led to him deciding to make a drastic change to his way of life, get back on the bike, and to set out to achieve his long time dream of cycling around the world.

“With seven billion people in the world, it’s kinda hard to get lonely!”

Throughout this episode we talk about his past bike touring experiences, what types of challenges he’s had to overcome while on this tour, how his friends and family feel about his tour, and what some of his best memories are so far. Scott shared some amazing stories of riding in Bangladesh, running out of money in various countries, and how the generosity of strangers always seems to occur at the times of greatest need.

Scott’s passion for photography and capturing people in their everyday lives, has led him off the beaten path while cycling around the various countries of SE Asia. Rather than a more tradition point A to point B bike tour, Scott’s path twists and turns, much like the Mekong River. While many bike tourists circumnavigate the world in 1-2 years, Scott’s plan will take him a minimum of 5 years. sure to check out my website www.biketouradventures.com for blog posts, pictures, videos, cycling tips and more.

Colin Unsworth | Naked Across Britain

Colin Unsworth | Naked Across Britain

In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I have a chance to speak with Colin Unsworth. What's interesting about Colin is that he is a naturalist, a re-wilder and lives on a canal boat. He calls himself a free-wilder, preferring to be naked in nature. In the summer of 2022, Colin and his partner Sadie, rode a tandem bike 1000 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End in the United Kingdom. The catch is that they did it totally in the buff. Throughout today's episode we talk about the logistics of cycling naked across the U.K., challenges with society's views towards nudity and various other interesting occurrences throughout the trip. They departed on the adventure with the intent of raising funds for a couple charities and surprisingly, with the amount of publicity they received, they were able to raise far more than planned. To support the Bike Tour Adventures podcast, follow the links below:https://www.patreon.com/bikepackadventures orhttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bikepackadventures Join the RideWithGPS Bikepack Adventures ClubFind them at:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/col.unsworthWebsite: https://foresthorizons.wixsite.com/nakedacrossbritainFind me at…WEBSITEYOUTUBEFACEBOOKINSTAGRAMITUNESShow SponsorsRedshift Sports --> Use code BPA15 to save 15% at checkoutRestrap --> Use code BTAPOD10 to save 10% at checkoutChiru BikesBrockton CycleryPanorama Cycles RaceDay Fuel --> Use code BTA10 to save 10% at checkout

Sofiane Sehili | Bike touring in the off-season

Sofiane Sehili | Bike touring in the off-season

In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I finally have the opportunity to learn a bit more about Sofiane Sehili. When I first reached out to Sofiane over a year ago, he told me that he's done a ton of podcasts and that he'd be happy to come on the show, so long as our conversation is on something new. After following Sofiane and his partner's adventure throughout SE Asia this past winter, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to have him share his adventure and talk about bike touring during bikepack racing's off-season. Most people will know Sofiane as a Parisian bike courier turned bikepacker, as a racer that has un unnatural ability to stay up for really long periods of time and of course, as a pretty highly regarded singer. What you may not know is that it all started for Sofiane on a bike trip in SE Asia years earlier. This time around he came back so he could share the experience with his partner. To support the Bike Tour Adventures podcast, follow the links below:https://www.patreon.com/bikepackadventures orhttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bikepackadventures Join the RideWithGPS Bikepack Adventures ClubFind them at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sofianeshl/?hl=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/sofiane.shlYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@sofianeshlWebsite: https://sofianesehili.com/Find me at…WEBSITEYOUTUBEFACEBOOKINSTAGRAMITUNESShow SponsorsRedshift Sports --> Use code BPA15 to save 15% at checkoutRestrap --> Use code BTAPOD10 to save 10% at checkoutChiru BikesBrockton CycleryPanorama CyclesRaceDay Fuel --> Use code BTA10 to save 10% at checkout

Jerry Kopack | "Am I using my time well?"

Jerry Kopack | "Am I using my time well?"

In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I had the chance to connect with Jerry Kopack. It's quite interesting, because he had recently been on a couple other podcasts, but I felt that there was so much I still wanted to learn about him, and figured there is no better time than the present. When Jerry first reached out, I thought he just wanted to promote his book, but surprisingly, we didn't talk too much about his book and instead spent our time talking about his journey from working for corporate America, to founding a hospice, to taking off on a 2-month bikepacking trip in Africa, which led to the journey lasting nearly 2 years. With a continual question propelling him forward, Jerry only ever tried to answer the question "Am I using my time well?" In the aftermath of his adventures, Jerry has taken on a role with Warmshowers on the Board of Governors and also as "the finance dude" as a means of giving back to the community that helped change his life. You might also recognize his voice from Bike Life, the Warmshowers podcast, as he has taken on some of the duties to lighten the load of the other host. Peter Glassford | The Consummate Athlete

Peter Glassford | The Consummate Athlete

In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I had the opportunity to speak with my cycling coach Peter Glassford. At the Consummate Athlete, the goal is simple; to help people lead their best active, adventurous lives through coaching, videos, podcasts, articles and events. Throughout our conversation, we talk about my own personal journey into bikepacking and what I have created for the greater community, both in terms of the podcast, route-sharing website, my own Grand Depart event and of course my latest endeavour, the Canadian Shield Bikepacking Summit. We then change directions and I throw some questions Peter's way, on things that I am constantly thinking about, such as training, eating, the importance of heart-rate as a means of measuring performance, alcohol, and more. Far from being the usual podcast style you are so used to listening to, I hope you enjoy this conversation with Peter. If you enjoy this episode and are looking for a little more guidance in your preparation for the coming season of cycling adventures, I highly recommend you check out www.consummateathlete.com.A huge thank you to Dave Weil for increasing his support pledge through Patreon.I hope you will also consider supporting this podcast. To support the Bike Tour Adventures podcast, follow the links below:https://www.patreon.com/bikepackadventures orhttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bikepackadventures Join the RideWithGPS Bikepack Adventures ClubFind them at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/consummateathlete/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/consummateathleteYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgI4Bth1qen4yDO-rJlGNhgTwitter: https://twitter.com/consummateathWebsite: https://consummateathlete.com/Find me at…WEBSITEYOUTUBEFACEBOOKINSTAGRAMITUNESShow SponsorsRedshift Sports --> Use code BPA15 to save 15% at checkoutRestrap --> Use code BTAPOD10 to save 10% at checkoutBrockton CycleryPanorama CyclesRaceDay Fuel...

Greg Andre-Barrett | Greg Biking Without Borders

Greg Andre-Barrett | Greg Biking Without Borders

In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I have a chance to speak with Greg Andre-Barrett, someone who has been on my radar since I saw he was tackling the ONXL. The ONXL is a series of connected bikepacking routes throughout Ontario, which account for over 6000km of predominantly off-road touring. After doing a little more research into Greg, I realized he has bikepacked all over the world, and that he is just an amazing human being. From his volunteer work getting bikes to those less fortunate to volunteering to teach English in poorer countries, Greg still finds time to ride his bike and take on some mighty big challenges. To support the Bike Tour Adventures podcast, follow the links below:https://www.patreon.com/bikepackadventures orhttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bikepackadventures Greg Andre-BarrettBrian Karbowski (pledge increase)Join the RideWithGPS Bikepack Adventures ClubFind them at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gregbikingwithoutborders/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GregBikingWithoutBordersYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@gregbikingwithoutbordersWebsite: https://gregbikingwithoutborders.blog/Find me at…WEBSITEYOUTUBEFACEBOOKINSTAGRAMITUNESShow SponsorsRedshift Sports --> Use code BPA15 to save 15% at checkoutRestrap --> Use code BTAPOD10 to save 10% at checkoutChiru BikesBrockton CycleryPanorama Cycles --> Use code BTA15 to save 15% on a 2023 Chic-Chocs fatbike at checkoutRaceDay Fuel --> Use code BTA10 to save 10% at checkout

Doug Dunlop | Coldbike.com

Doug Dunlop | Coldbike.com

In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I have a chance to dive deep into cold biking with Doug Dunlop. A veteran winter biker with decades of experience riding in the winter, Doug was one of the first people to reach out with advice when I complained of cold feet this winter when I got a fatbike. Doug has participated in numerous winter biking events, countless overnighters and was also on the start line of the first Iditarod Trail Invitational after it changed from being the Iditabike. Doug is also an advocate for getting children involved in winter exploration and when his children were younger he took them on multiple overnight adventures. He also makes his own custom winter-riding gear which he sells on his site coldbike.com.
