They Wanted to Be Like Scream… Then They Murdered Cassie Jo Stoddart | #85

On September 2006, 16-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddart was housesitting for her aunt and uncle outside Pocatello, Idaho when what seemed like a normal night with friends turned into a nightmare. Two teenagers, Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik, had been secretly planning a murder. They created a kill list, bought knives, hid inside the house, cut the power — and even filmed themselves before and after the attack. The case would eventually become known as “The Scream Murders” because of the killers’ fascination with horror movies and their recorded comments about wanting to create a real-life version of Scream. But was the movie really responsible? Or was Scream simply attached to a crime that had much deeper motivations? In Episode #85 of Horror Whiskey Company, Jamie and Peter break down the murder of Cassie Jo Stoddart, the investigation that exposed Brian and Torey, the disturbing videotape that helped seal their fate, their obsession with Columbine, and the debate surrounding their life-without-parole sentences. And because we apparently can't discuss murder without making a drink, we're also mixing up the Pocatello Pretender, our cocktail inspired by the case.🍸 Grab a drink and join us.Like, subscribe, and tell us in the comments:Do you think this case deserves to be called “The Scream Murders”?#TrueCrime #ScreamMurders #CassieJoStoddart #HorrorWhiskeyCompany #TrueCrimePodcast00:00 The terrifying night begins01:02 Welcome to Horror Whiskey Company #8502:08 The “Scream Murders”02:38 Cocktail: The Pocatello Pretender07:02 Jamie vs. Peter’s cocktail recipes08:34 Whiskey talk & getting drunk on the podcast10:48 Who was Cassie Jo Stoddart?16:43 September 22, 2006 — the night of the murder17:38 The power suddenly goes out18:02 The dog growls at the basement19:50 Cassie is found two days later23:22 Detectives discover two knives may have been used26:59 Matt Beckham’s timeline29:52 Matt takes a polygraph31:27 Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik enter the investigation32:42 Brian’s fake movie alibi starts falling apart34:16 Police check the movie theater39:37 Brian begins confessing45:00 Brian and Torey’s friendship & the camcorder45:50 Brian’s obsession with Columbine47:42 Why this became known as “The Scream Murders”50:08 The kill list and buying the knives55:00 Brian and Torey hide inside the house55:13 They cut the power1:00:04 Police find the buried evidence1:00:15 The videotape changes everything1:05:01 The disturbing aftermath recording1:09:50 Brian and Torey are convicted1:09:58 Life without parole1:13:50 Juvenile life sentences & later appeals1:20:02 Remembering Cassie1:20:32 Should this really be called “The Scream Murders”?1:20:55 Who was more responsible — Brian or Torey?1:23:31 Was Brian trying to shift the blame?1:25:20 Columbine, friendship and escalation1:28:39 How Brian and Torey appear today1:30:32 Could either of them ever get out?1:39:59 The most important person in the story: Cassie1:40:48 Stay weird, stay wicked, stay wasted
