What’s the Big Deal About Iceland?

Among analysts, industry insiders, aquaculture experts, and just about anyone with even a passing interest in fish farming, whether at sea or on land, Iceland has become one of the industry's hottest talking points in recent years.

Some believe salmon production on the island could grow from around 60,000 tonnes to as much as 400,000 tonnes, given the right conditions and policy framework.

So we headed west to the land of sagas, attended the AquaIce conference, and brought three highly respected experts together on stage for an in-depth discussion.

Joining us are Árni Mathiesen, former Icelandic Minister of Fisheries and Minister of Finance, and former Assistant Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); Sigurgeir Bárðarson of Fisheries Iceland (SFS), representing Iceland's aquaculture industry; and Dag Sletmo, seafood analyst at DNB, the world's largest seafood bank.

Is Iceland on the verge of becoming the next salmon superpower? And what can the rest of the industry learn from what is happening there?
