7 Good Minutes: Extra - The Other Explanation Rule: What To Do With a Short Reply

7 Good Minutes: Extra - The Other Explanation Rule: What To Do With a Short Reply

A short reply or a quiet moment doesn't tell you what someone meant — but the story you build around it can feel just as real as a fact, unless you catch it in time.

Here's a simple way to catch it: the Other Explanation Rule. The moment you notice you've decided what a flat text, a short tone, or a silence means, pause and name it plainly — I'm guessing right now, not reading minds. Then name one specific explanation that has nothing to do with you: they're driving, mid-task with a kid, their phone's about to die. It doesn't have to be true. It only has to be plausible, so your mind has somewhere else to go besides straight to rejection.

If it genuinely matters, ask a plain, low-pressure question instead of reacting to the guess. Something as simple as "hey, everything okay?" does more than a defensive reply or a cold shoulder ever could.

This won't make every short reply feel neutral right away. What it does is buy you one real alternative before you treat an unconfirmed story as settled fact.
