Grandma Arrested as Girl Kept in Cage Dies in House of Horror

Police in Tempe, Arizona responded to an emergency call where they tragically discovered that a thirteen-year-old girl named Melanie Granados had passed away in horrific conditions. Investigators found the special-needs victim covered in sores and living inside a makeshift cage filled with feces to maintain control over her. The child's grandmother, Virginia Luhan, and mother, Jamie Hajes, both admitted to utilizing the enclosure after the children were placed in the older relative's care due to prior family instability. Although Luhan claimed the victim had simply fallen down the stairs and blamed her daughter for the chaotic household, authorities indicted her on multiple counts of child abuse and evidence tampering. Tragically, Luhan passed away while in custody in late 2025, while records subsequently revealed a lengthy, troubling history of neglect involving the state's child welfare agency.
