S1 Ep36 Dance Workshop The Gaze Series with Yari Stilo (What Is a Gaze? Is looking already choreographic)

In this workshop, Peter is joined by Yari Stilo to begin a series exploring the gaze: what it is, how it operates, and what it does to dancing.

Starting with the question “What is a gaze?”, the episode moves through a sequence of physical experiments:

Unfocused vs. Deliberate Sight: Dancing without deliberately looking at anything vs. anchoring on a specific object.
Near, Middle & Far: Exploring different visual ranges, including imaginary horizons.
Initiation & Tracking: Allowing the eyes to lead the body’s movement vs. allowing the body to move first while the gaze follows.
Choreographing the Witness: Changing only the gaze while keeping the movement constant, observing how looking creates frontality and connection.

Along the way, the gaze becomes more than simply looking. It becomes a choreographic tool, a way of directing attention, a relationship to space, and something that alters both dancing and witnessing.

Questions Explored

What is the difference between simple looking and the gaze?
Where does the gaze actually reside—in the eyes, the back of the head, or the environment?
Can you gaze without looking directly at something?
Who or what is being addressed when the gaze shifts?
