5 Parkinson’s Symptoms That Make Daily Life Harder Than People Realize

“But you don't look like you have Parkinson’s.”

If you've ever heard those words, you know how frustrating they can be.

Because Parkinson’s doesn't always look the way people expect. Some symptoms are obvious. Others are invisible. And sometimes the hardest part isn't the symptom itself, but having to convince someone that what you're experiencing is real.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, I share five symptoms and challenges that make everyday life harder than people realize:

• Morning stiffness and slowness: When simply getting out of bed feels like a full-body negotiation• Parkinson’s fatigue: The kind of exhaustion that makes ordinary tasks feel impossible, even when you look perfectly fine• Walking, balance, and freezing: Why moving through everyday environments can become a constant risk assessment• Bathroom problems: How constipation, urgency, and unpredictable bathroom needs can affect confidence and independence• Being judged or misunderstood: When people stare because your symptoms are visible or question your diagnosis because they aren't

And this episode gets personal.

We recently received a message from someone who questioned whether I even had Parkinson’s because I didn't look the way they expected someone with Parkinson’s to look.

Carmen read that message. And Carmen had something to say.

In Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, Carmen joins me directly to share what people don't see on camera: the stiffness, fatigue, medication planning, frustration, and difficult moments that happen before and after recording.

She also reminds us that people whose Parkinson’s symptoms are very visible face judgment too.

Her message is simple:

“Nobody should have to prove they are sick enough to be believed.”

Because Parkinson’s doesn't have one appearance, one timeline, or one experience.

And sometimes the person you're watching may only be showing you their best five minutes.

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
