When Friends Pull Away After Parkinson’s: The Loneliness Nobody Warns You About

When Friends Pull Away After Parkinson’s: The Loneliness Nobody Warns You About

How many people were in your life when you were diagnosed with Parkinson’s? And how many are still there today?

Not the people who occasionally like your Facebook posts.

I mean the people who still call, still invite you, still check in, and still see YOU instead of just your Parkinson’s.

Because sometimes Parkinson’s doesn't just change your body.

It changes your friendships.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, we're talking about something that rarely appears on a Parkinson’s symptom list: the loneliness of watching people slowly disappear from your life.

We talk about:

• The slow fade: When phone calls, invitations, and friendships gradually disappear• Why friends pull away: Sometimes it's discomfort, uncertainty, or simply not knowing what to say• The pain of being excluded: Why deciding someone can't attend an event instead of inviting them can hurt deeply• Feeling invisible: When people stop seeing the person and only see the diagnosis• Learning who your people really are: Why Parkinson’s can reveal which relationships have genuine depth• Building a new circle: Finding meaningful friendships, community, and people who understand your reality

One of the hardest parts is realizing that some people don't leave because of an argument.

They simply stop showing up.

And sometimes that hurts more than an actual goodbye.

I also share something that's helped me change how I look at friendships:

Stop measuring your life by who left and start protecting your heart with the people who stayed.

You'll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen talks about something we often overlook.

Care partners lose friendships too.

Parkinson’s can change a couple's social life, relationships, and support system. And care partners deserve people who check in on them, not just people who ask how the person with Parkinson’s is doing.

Because losing people hurts.

But losing people doesn't mean losing your worth.

And sometimes the people who stay, the people who keep showing up, become the family you never expected to find.

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
