5 Parkinson’s Pain Traps Nobody Warns You About

5 Parkinson’s Pain Traps Nobody Warns You About

Have you ever had pain with Parkinson’s and wondered, “Is this Parkinson’s, getting older, or did my body just wake up and choose violence?”

Sometimes it's stiffness. Sometimes it's cramping. Sometimes it's a deep ache that seems to come out of nowhere.

And when someone asks what's wrong, all you can say is, “I hurt.”

But pain with Parkinson’s can be complicated, and sometimes the patterns behind it are just as important as the pain itself.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, I share five pain traps that can make daily life even harder:

• Blaming everything on aging: Why pain deserves a closer look instead of automatically being dismissed as getting older.

• Ignoring stiffness until it becomes painful: How stiffness can build throughout the day and why small, safe movements may help.

• Missing the timing patterns: Why pain that appears around medication doses, stress, poor sleep, or prolonged sitting deserves attention.

• Pushing through pain because of guilt: Why ignoring your body's warning signs can sometimes leave you paying for it later.

• Not explaining your pain clearly: Why telling your doctor when, where, and how pain affects your life can lead to a much more useful conversation.

And that fifth one is especially important.

Don't just tell your doctor you hurt. Tell them what the pain is taking away from your life.

You'll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen shares a simple way for couples to communicate about pain using yellow lights and red lights.

Yellow means you're uncomfortable but may be able to continue with adjustments.

Red means it's time to stop, ask for help, or change the plan.

And I share a simple framework you can use with your doctor:

“I'm having pain in ___. It usually happens around ___. It feels like ___. It gets worse when ___, and it affects my day by ___.”

Because Parkinson’s pain is real, and it deserves more than a shrug and another instruction to just live with it.

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
