Why "Nothing Is Wrong" Is a Dangerous Medical Lie

If your house smelled like smoke, you wouldn't wait for fire before doing something about it. So why does medicine wait for damage?

This is a new episode of Diagnose This. Dr. Z is joined by Destiny Davis, LPC, CRC — a mental health therapist in Atlanta who specializes in chronic pain and complex medical conditions — to talk about what happens to people in the gap between something is wrong and the system finally believes them.

Destiny watched her mother get told for years that it was in her head, that she just needed to lose weight, that she was malingering. When Destiny started experiencing her own chronic symptoms at 18, she didn't go to the doctor. Because she'd already seen what happened when you did.

That's not an unusual story. It's the story of 76% of this country — which now has at least one chronic illness, up from 60% just a few years ago. Three-quarters of the population. And most of them are still being told nothing is wrong.

This episode is about what it actually costs to live in that gap. The isolation. The self-doubt. The learned helplessness. The shame of needing accommodations when nobody around you can see what's wrong. And what it looks like to build a life anyway — not by pretending the illness isn't there, but by building around it until it becomes a secret weapon instead of a sentence.

In this episode:

  • Why "nothing is wrong" is a time problem, not a medical conclusion

  • Destiny's story — watching her mother get gaslit, and what it taught her about not asking for help

  • Why 76% of Americans have a chronic illness — and why we still treat it like the minority experience

  • The difference between coping and giving up — and where acceptance actually lives

  • What therapy for chronic illness actually looks like

  • Building something around what you have to live with — and why that's not settling

If you've ever been told "you're fine" when you know deep down you're not, Dr. Z was you. Now she's fixing what dismissed both of you.

Seven specialists. Eight prescriptions. Her brain electrocuted 20 times for what turned out to be an infection. They labelled her permanently disabled. Told her she'd never work again. So she's fixing the system that failed both of you.

This isn't just a podcast. It's the platform she desperately needed when she was sick, dismissed, alone, and searching for answers at 2 AM because no one else was asking WHY.
