S6E19 - TOMINO-THON! Mobile Suit VICTORY GUNDAM (1993) – The Dark Apex of Kill ‘em All Tomino

1993’s Mobile Suit Victory Gundam is one of the most critical turning points in the history of both Gundam and its creator, Tomino Yoshiyuki. In many ways, it’s the series that ‘broke’ Tomino, as both a person and an artist, sending him into a years-long depression and causing him to walk away from Sunrise, leaving Gundam to go in its own direction through the 90s. But it’s also a genuine masterpiece: a bold, harrowing, and unforgettable work that is equal parts brutal and beautiful, with some of Tomino’s greatest character creations and most kinetic direction. This is a series that only grows stronger on rewatch, and as such, our discussion of it here gets to go even deeper than we did back on Weekly Suit Gundam.

Enjoy, and come back next week as we leave both Gundam and Sunrise behind for a bit with the 1996 OVA Garzey’s Wing!
