Fall asleep inside history. Tonight you arrive in Timbuktu more than five hundred years ago, at the height of its golden age, riding in at dusk with a salt caravan from the desert and taken in as the guest of a scholar's family in the quarter near the great Sankore mosque. The day's heat leaves the thick mud walls slowly all night long. Small clay lamps burn shea butter beside loose leaves of precious hand copied paper, astronomy and poetry and law. A simple supper waits, warm milk sweetened with honey and cool water from the well, and after the call to the night prayer the whole city of learning goes quietly to sleep around you while the camels settle at the edge of the quarter and a bed is made up for you on the flat roof beneath the thickest stars in the world.

You will hear the warm desert wind moving over the mud brick walls, the small sounds of a courtyard settling for the night, and the deep quiet of a city of scholars asleep under an immense field of stars.

This is a three hour sleep story. The narration ends softly around the 38 minute mark, and then the warm desert night carries on in the dark until morning. Black screen friendly.
