Types of Collagen:

  • Type 1 collagen is the most abundant and considered the strongest type of collagen in our body. It's fibers form tendons, ligaments, organs and our skin. Type 1 collagen helps form bones and is important for wound healing, gives our skin its elastic quality, and keeps our tissues from tearing.
  • Type 2 collagen primarily purpose is to help build cartilage that is found in our connective tissues. Our joint health requires cartilage made of type 2 collagen which will help prevent age-related joint pain.
  • Type 3 collagen is a major component of our extracellular matrix that makes up our skin and organs. It's often found with type 1 and helps give skin both elasticity and firmness. Blood vessels and heart tissue are formed with Type 3 which is why deficiency in type 3 collagen could be an issue in heart health.
  • Type 4 collagen is important in forming Basal lamina cells that form tissue surrounding our organs, muscles, and fat. Basal lamina is needed for various nerve and blood vessel functions and they line the majority of our digestive organs and respiratory surfaces.
  • Type 5 collagen is needed to make the surface of cells, as well as hair strands and tissue found in women's placentas.
  • Type 10 collagen helps with new bone formation and forming articular cartilage and is beneficial for healing and repairing bone fractures.
