What The Stanford Prison Experiment Tells Us About Cults

It's perhaps the most famous psychological study ever but what does it really tell us? And what might it tell us about cults?

In the 1970s Professor Philip Zimbardo created a simulated prison in the basement of a college building, separating volunteer students into the roles of prisoners and guards to observe their behaviour. What happened next is disturbing, and led to a view that when it comes to behaviour, more important than the individual's ethics and morality, it's the situation that really matters. In addition to the obvious ethical issues raised by the study there have fairly recently been challenges to its claims and the scientific methodology. Stephen and Celine go deep into what it really tells us and it's not what was claimed.

He also describes growing up in a family with an abusive father, protected by the Group, and his journey out of both the religion and the mindset. Ep 50. Self Help

Ep 50. Self Help

As a member of a high control group Stephen was taught that 'self-help' books and programs (that were not from the cult) were dangerous and wrong. When you leave there's a desire and a possible need for self development, but there's also a risk of getting sucked into another all-encompassing system of belief. We discuss this question and more in the latest episode.  Plus we have 'Tweet of the Week' where we look at biases and how much High Control Groups use these to influence their followers and potential victims. Cults as depicted in Star Trek

Cults as depicted in Star Trek

Film and TV often depict cultic groups. This week we explore how this is done in Star Trek with the Episode 'The Way to Eden'. We scrutinise this fictional cult using former guest Dr. Lalich's Bounded Choice Model, and also consider how general anxieties in wider society help the viewer to make sense of what they are seeing. Plus we laugh at the amazing cauliflower ears of the cult leader in the show.   Episode discussed: The Way to Eden: Star Trek TOS Season 3 Episode 20 Paradise: Star Trek Deep Space Nine Season 2 Episode 15 Star Trek Movie, The Final Frontier

Ep 45. Dr. Janja Lalich, Cult Researcher

Ep 45. Dr. Janja Lalich, Cult Researcher

One of the most influential researchers into cults, Dr Lalich has experienced the phenomena of cults both from the inside, as a member and then as a researcher. She is Professor Emerita of Sociology at California State University, an author and educator and speaks eloquently and compassionately about the experience of being a member of a high control group.  We enjoyed a wonderful interview with Dr. Lalich in which she talks about the Bounded Choice model and her book Leaving Utopia specifically about "born-ins" - a particular area of interest to this podcast. We talk about the particular difficulties for those born into groups, the added challenges for members of fundamentalist religious cults who are LGBTQ+, homeschooling, how society should deal with coercive groups and much more.
