Ep. 511: The Sharp End of Life and Raising Alex Honnold - Dierdre Wolownick-Honnold

Ep. 511: The Sharp End of Life and Raising Alex Honnold - Dierdre Wolownick-Honnold

Long before her son was doing some of the most incredible climbing in the world and her daughter was solo bike touring around the west, Dierdre was living a life full of adventure. From moving to different countries and starting orchestras from scratch to raising two kids by herself and working much more than fulltime, Dierdre enjoyed taking on out-of-the-box challenges and seeing what she’s made of. Never to be one to think of age as a limitation, Dierdre started running at the age of 55 and became climbing at 58.  Within a few years, she was running marathons and by 66 she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the same rock that her son, Alex, would free solo. It’s evident in both her children that they were raised by someone with lots of room to live outside the box. We hope you enjoy this conversation. https://www.facebook.com/DierdreWolownick The book (available May 1):  sharpendoflife.com @dierdre_wolownick_honnold Dierdrew.us **ANNOUNCEMENT** ADVENTURE GRANT APPLICATION OPEN  Go to athleticbrewing.com/adventure-grant-application to apply for our first ever $1,000 adventure grant, funded by Athletic Brewing Company!  Follow the link for all the rules and instructions for how to apply! Ep. 510: Solo Crossing of Frozen Lake Baikal in Siberia Revisited - Gavan Hennigan

As if living 700 ft below the surface of the ocean isn't adventurous enough, Gavan takes his breaks from his day job to explore some of the highest peaks in the world as well as the most brutal environments on our planet. He has competed in some of the longest, toughest ultramarathons, like the Likeys 6633 Ultra 350 and the Yukon Arctic Ultra 300. Ep. 507: A Motorcycle Adventure That Almost Ended in Tragedy Revisited - Glen Heggstad

Most motorcycle adventures are completed with a little trouble, but all-in-all they come off without a hitch. Glen Heggstad decided he would like to try the ever-popular trip to Tierra Del Fuego, the southernmost tip of South America. Things went well for Glen for the first month. After that, the trip took a very dramatic turn. So much so that National Geographic decided to produce a documentary about it. Ep. 505: Dog Sledding and Life in Alaska - Iditarod Racer, Kristin Knight Pace

Kristin Knight Pace is one tough person. Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what she did. That toughness has also led her to become one of only 29 women to complete both the Iditarod and the Yukon Question 1000-mile sled dog races.  Kristin is now remarried and has started a new journey, motherhood. She also works as a wilderness planner for Denali National Park and has recently written a book about her experiences, This Much Country. It can be found following the link below or pretty much anywhere else you buy books.  We hope you enjoy listening to this life outside the box!
