Katie Cannon is the education director of Carolina Tiger Rescue, North Carolina’s only federally accredited wild cat sanctuary. A federally accredited sanctuary means Carolina Tiger Rescue is a 501-c3 non-profit; it does not buy, sell, or trade any of its animals or their parts; it does not do any breeding; and it is a no-contact facility. This week we discuss the national animal of the United States, the American Bison. We also touch upon its closely related cousin, the European Bison. Once numbering in the millions, the American Bison was reduced to just under 350 animals in the United States. The European Bison’s tale is similar.
