Equitable Grading with Kari Daggs & Paula Waite

In this episode, Madison College Information Technology Program faculty, Kari Daggs and Paula Waite, discuss how they were inspired by the book, Grading for Equity, by Joe Feldman to move away from traditional grading methods and implement more equitable grading practices into their courses. They share what they’ve tried - what worked, what didn’t, and how their students have reacted to the changes.

Kari Daggs (she/her/hers) has been teaching computer programming courses in the Information Technology department at Madison College since 2016. She holds a B.F.A in Graphic Design and an M.S. in Information Communications Technology. Kari enjoys taking her graphic and user experience design background to create an engaging and meaningful curriculum. More recently, she has been on a personal mission to understand the inequities embedded in our educational system and build a more inclusive and equitable experience in her classroom and beyond. In Kari’s spare time, she raises chickens, is a proud cat and dog mommy, and maintains a forever growing edible landscape outside of Madison, Wisconsin.

Paula Waite (she/her/hers) has over twenty years of experience as a software engineer and has been teaching software development in the Information Technology Department at Madison College since 2014. With a passion for both technology and teaching, she recently earned an M.S. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Adult Education. Paula is on a personal journey to learn about, share, and improve teaching practices and curriculum with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
