The Kind and Scientific Way to Help Your Loved One Change Their Drinking with Dr. Jeffrey Foote

Are you frustrated with your loved one who drinks too much? Do you feel powerless and unsure of how to help someone who has a drinking problem or other addiction? Are you sober now and struggling with your partner who still drinks? Learn how you can help someone change with a science and compassionate-based approach. You don’t have to be “enabling,” use “tough love” or wait for them to hit “rock bottom.” Dr. Jeffrey Foote joins the show today to show us how we can help a loved one make a positive change and keep our sanity.

Dr. Jeffrey Foote, Phd, is cofounder of the Center for Motivation and Change (CMC) outpatient programs on the east coast. He is also cofounder and executive director of the CMC: Foundation for Change, a nonprofit organization with the mission of improving the dissemination of evidence-based ideas and strategies to the families of persons struggling with substance use. Additionally, he is coauthor of the award-winning book, Beyond Addiction-How Science and Kindness Help People Change and the new book, The Beyond Addiction Workbook.

We talk about:

  • What we’ve gotten wrong about helping people change
  • Understanding why someone drinks
  • How a drinking problem is also a learning problem
  • Why addiction is not a traditional disease
  • How the Invitation to Change approach works
  • What to do when you’re sober and your partner drinks
