Jonathan Pauling is chief executive of the Alexandra rose charity, whose vision is for everyone to have access to healthy and affordable food and whose mission is to give families access to fresh fruit & vegetables in their communities.I hadn’t come across the charity before, but our values are so aligned! It was founded in 1912 by Queen Alexandra and established to support Londoners in poverty. Inspired by a priest in her native Denmark selling roses to raise money for those in need, Queen Alexandra brought the idea back to the UK.In a landmark study that started a few months ago, they are trialling rose vouchers that are exchangeable for healthy fruit and vegetables from street market vendors in deprived areas. This latest trial is on the back of years of work across other areas in the UK and pilots where they’re also involved in cooking workshops and healthy start vouchers for families with young children. Something that Johnathan mentions on the podcast today really hit home to me. He said we can’t just tackle financial inequality, we have to tackle health inequality.And from previous schemes they’ve already demonstrated that simply increasing fruit and vegetable consumption can lead to improvements in energy, digestive health and reduced the reliance on processed foods. Add potato, barley, palm oil, soy and sugar (beet and cane) and you have 75% of all the calories that fuel our species. As thousands of foods have become endangered and extinct, a small number have risen to dominance.And it’s killing us.The lack of diversity on our plates affects our health and the systematic stripping out of crops adaptive mechanisms, the result of 1000s of years of adaptions, renders them exposed to parasites, pests and disease.But Dan provides a dose of hope. Sometimes it was a form of self discipline and religious practice, sometimes out of frugality and generally tradition! And the dishes were always meant to be vegan, rather than a plant based version of a meat dish. Which is scary and could be triggering for a number of people. Dr Nasha Winters, who has suffered with cancer herself, does not shy away from the realities of our toxic environment and dealing with cravings for addictive foods so if you feel that you may be triggered by these descriptions then I reckon this is probably not the podcast to listen to.Part of the reason why we wanted to release this episode, despite it being slightly out of the norm of our typically conversation, is because we need to build mental resilience to these realities. Unfortunately we have a toxic environment, and in fact in December 2020 Southwark Coroner's Court found that air pollution "made a material contribution" to the death of 9 year old Ella Kiss-Debrah in 2013, after over two years of severe asthma attacks and cardiac arrests that led to multiple hospital visits.
