Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Nobody wants to name the problem, but let’s call it what it is: social injustice is part of our healthcare system. Black and Hispanic people are far more likely to get sick and die from the 10 leading causes of death due to a range of factors, including lack of access and discrimination in our healthcare system and policies. When you consider that most treatments and drugs are only tested on white males, it’s clear we’re ignoring the unique wellness needs of so many other populations. And the result of these disparities gets passed down through generations. We need to work on solutions now. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones from Cleveland Clinic to talk about these issues and ways to create a new multi-cultural dynamic in healthcare. Dr. Charles Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Executive Director of Minority Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Physician Lead for Public Health. He founded and directs Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center. Dr. Leonor Osorio has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital practicing Internal medicine since 2001. She was instrumental in the opening of the Lutheran Hospital Hispanic Clinic, which connects patients to Spanish speaking physicians. Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic who leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv. I recently I discovered Joovv, a red light therapy device. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin. Healing Autoimmune Disease Using A Functional Medicine Approach with Dr. Sunjya Schweig

Healing Autoimmune Disease Using A Functional Medicine Approach with Dr. Sunjya Schweig

This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and InsideTracker. The array of frustrating symptoms that come along with autoimmune diseases leave those who are suffering constantly looking for answers. Simply put, autoimmune diseases—like rheumatoid arthritis, celiac sprue, inflammatory bowel, type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto’s, Graves’, lupus, fibromyalgia, and so many more—are conditions where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues rather than a foreign molecule like bacteria. This happens when something confuses the immune system. Today, I’m joined by Dr. Sunjya Schweig to discuss why autoimmune issues are on the rise and how we can treat them using a Functional Medicine approach. Sunjya K. Schweig, MD, is deeply committed to building a cutting-edge, data-driven ecosystem for the prevention and reversal of chronic illness. As the founder and president of the California Center for Functional Medicine, Dr. Schweig and his team provide personalized, precision medicine care to help people with chronic illness recover their health. In 2021, Dr. Schweig founded the Functional Medicine Research and Technology Center, which aims to prevent and reverse chronic illness through research, education, and innovation. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Schweig completed his MD at the University of California, Irvine, and his family medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco, Family Practice Residency Program in Santa Rosa, CA. He is board certified in family practice (ABFM) integrative and holistic medicine (ABIHM). This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and InsideTracker. How Our Environment Shapes Our Health

How Our Environment Shapes Our Health

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and Paleovalley.   Heart disease, cancer, and stroke are the leading causes of death in the US. These diseases all have several risk factors in common, like smoking, physical inactivity, and poor diet, which policymakers often view simply as personal choices. Yet there are many reasons we need to begin looking at health beyond the individual.   In today’s episode, I talk with Dan Buettner, James Maskell, Tawny Jones, and Dr. Gabor Maté about how our environment shapes our health and why community is vital to healing. Dan Buettner is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world—dubbed Blue Zones—where people live the longest, healthiest lives.   James Maskell has spent the past decade innovating at the intersection of Functional Medicine and community, where he created the Functional Forum, the world’s largest Functional Medicine conference, with record-setting participation. His organization and first book of the same name, The Evolution of Medicine, prepares health professionals for this new era of preventive medicine.   Tawny Jones has been an accomplished administrator at the Cleveland Clinic for 19 years. She leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, sharing the efficacy of Functional Medicine and demonstrating its cost-effectiveness and ability to improve health. The Functioning for Life shared medical program for chronic disease management is her brainchild.    A renowned speaker and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté is highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics including addiction, stress, and childhood development. Dr. Maté has written several bestselling books. His latest book, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture, was just released. Are There Any Healthy Sugars And Sweeteners?

Are There Any Healthy Sugars And Sweeteners?

This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and InsideTracker. As hunter-gatherers, we ate the equivalent of only 20 teaspoons of sugar a year. Today, we eat over 150 pounds per year per person, or half a pound per day. The average school kid eats 34 teaspoons of sugar a day. Many supermarkets and health-food stores now carry many sneaky sources of sugar disguised in unrecognizable ingredients and so-called “healthy” foods that contain as much—if not more—sugar than their regular versions. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking all about sugar and sweeteners. I discuss how sugar can dramatically alter your metabolism and brain chemistry, causing you to suffer intense cravings, how quitting sugar can rapidly improve your health, the different types of sugars, and what sugars we should absolutely stay away from. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and InsideTracker. For a limited time, new subscribers to ButcherBox will receive ground beef FOR LIFE.
