Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Why We Have The Worst Health Outcomes Of All Industrialized Nations with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones

Nobody wants to name the problem, but let’s call it what it is: social injustice is part of our healthcare system. Black and Hispanic people are far more likely to get sick and die from the 10 leading causes of death due to a range of factors, including lack of access and discrimination in our healthcare system and policies. When you consider that most treatments and drugs are only tested on white males, it’s clear we’re ignoring the unique wellness needs of so many other populations. And the result of these disparities gets passed down through generations. We need to work on solutions now. This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy I sat down with Dr. Charles Modlin, Dr. Leonor Osorio, and Tawny Jones from Cleveland Clinic to talk about these issues and ways to create a new multi-cultural dynamic in healthcare. Dr. Charles Modlin is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Executive Director of Minority Health, and the Cleveland Clinic Physician Lead for Public Health. He founded and directs Cleveland Clinic’s Minority Men’s Health Center. Dr. Leonor Osorio has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital practicing Internal medicine since 2001. She was instrumental in the opening of the Lutheran Hospital Hispanic Clinic, which connects patients to Spanish speaking physicians. Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic who leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. This episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is brought to you by Joovv. I recently I discovered Joovv, a red light therapy device. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin. It actually helps your cells produce collagen so it improves skin tone and complexion, diminishes signs of aging like wrinkles, and speeds the healing of wounds and scars. To check out the Joovv products for yourself head over to joovv.com/farmacy. Once you’re there, you’ll see a special bonus the Joovv team is giving away to my listeners. How To Eat Like Blue Zones In America with Dan Buettner

How To Eat Like Blue Zones In America with Dan Buettner

This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, InsideTracker, and Rupa Health. When we hear the phrase “Blue Zones,” most of us think of the healthy, long-living populations in places like Greece and Costa Rica. And while the large majority of these communities are indeed abroad (there is only one Blue Zone in the US), there are some hidden traditions that cooks around America have passed from generation to generation that we can embrace to create our own Blue Zone at home. It’s interesting to note that at the same time we’re seeing a huge interest in longevity, we’re seeing a drop in life expectancy for the first time in living history over the last few years. The biggest culprit is our processed food supply.  Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dan Buettner and I break down why chronic disease is so rampant in the US, what we can learn from the Blue Zones around the world, and how to bring Blue Zone principles into our own kitchens while embracing American traditions. Dan Buettner is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world— dubbed Blue Zone hotspots, where people live the longest, healthiest lives. His articles about these places in The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic are two of the most popular for both publications. This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, InsideTracker, and Rupa Health. Magnesium Breakthrough really stands out from the other magnesium supplements out there. Why High Starch And Sugar Diets Drive Insulin Resistance And Chronic Disease

Why High Starch And Sugar Diets Drive Insulin Resistance And Chronic Disease

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and Essentia.   The leading cause of inflammation is a poor diet—specifically one rich in addictive starches and refined sugars that keep us eating more than we need to because they don’t fill us up. This standard American diet (SAD) of refined flour and sugar is the gateway to insulin resistance, diabetes, and other metabolic issues, which cause rapid aging and chronic disease.   In today’s episode, I talk with Dhru Purohit, Gary Taubes, and Dr. Ronesh Sinha about why we need to ditch the high-starch diet if we want to improve our metabolism and reduce chronic disease.   Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.   ⁣Gary Taubes is an award-winning science and health journalist and cofounder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative. He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and a correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine.   Dr. Ronesh Sinha, author of The South Asian Health Solution, is an internal medicine physician who runs a lifestyle clinic in Silicon Valley focused on reversing insulin resistance in ethnically diverse patients. He is also an expert in corporate wellness and serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Silicon Valley Employer Forum, where he serves as a global adviser to shape health benefits for over 55 major Silicon Valley companies.   This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and Essentia.   Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. How CoQ10 Supports Heart Health, Prevents Migraines, And Improves Cognition

How CoQ10 Supports Heart Health, Prevents Migraines, And Improves Cognition

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. CoQ10 is a compound whose job is to help cells generate energy, so it’s no surprise there are so many wonderful benefits to getting enough of this critical coenzyme. Although you can find it in supplement form, it is also naturally produced by the body. Unfortunately, however, as you age the production of CoQ10 declines. It also declines with chronic stress, toxin exposures, and certain medications. The decreased amount of CoQ10 in your cells contributes to the gradual loss of energy that most of us experience in our thirties and beyond.  In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking all about coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10—what it is, what it can do for us, and how to ensure we are getting enough of this critical nutrient. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. How To Reduce Your Toxic Burden And Prevent Exposure

How To Reduce Your Toxic Burden And Prevent Exposure

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and Beekeeper’s Naturals.   Environmental toxins can wreak havoc on your body. And our bodies can only handle so much. There is a threshold, and when it’s passed, toxins can’t effectively be processed out of the body and are left lingering. When our toxic load is maxed out we start to see symptoms and dysfunctions.    In today’s episode, I speak with Dr. Casey Means, Harriet Washington, and Maggie Ward about reducing your toxic exposure, the compounded effect of toxic exposures, and more.   Dr. Casey Means is a Stanford-trained physician, Chief Medical Officer and cofounder of metabolic health company Levels, an associate editor of the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, and a lecturer at Stanford University. Her mission is to maximize human potential and reverse the epidemic of preventable chronic disease by empowering individuals with tools that can facilitate a deep understanding of our bodies and inform personalized and sustainable dietary and lifestyle choices.    Harriet Washington has been the Shearing Fellow at the University of Nevada's Black Mountain Institute, a Research Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School, a senior research scholar at the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University, and a visiting scholar at DePaul University College of Law. She is the author of Deadly Monopolies, Infectious Madness, Medical Apartheid, and A Terrible Thing to Waste, a book that looks at the devastating consequences of environmental racism—and what we can do to remedy its toxic effects on marginalized communities.   Maggie Ward, MS, RD, LDN, is the Nutrition Director at The UltraWellness Center. She holds a master’s degree in nutrition from Bastyr University and focuses on using whole foods for holistic nutrition therapy. In addition, she completed her requirements to become a registered dietitian at Westchester Medical Center in New York.   This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and Beekeeper’s.   Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains.
