Why Psychedelics May Be The Future Of PTSD, Addiction, And Depression Treatment

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and LMNT. Compounds that have long been considered recreational drugs by conventional standards are finally being recognized through science as powerful tools for overcoming hard-to-treat health issues like PTSD, depression, addiction, and more. For the right person, psychedelics can provide a sense of peace and hope that helps heal their inner wounds and allows them to live with more freedom. In today’s episode, I talk with Rick Doblin, Alberto Villoldo, and Wade Davis about the ancient healing mechanisms of plant medicine. Rick Doblin, PhD, is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. His professional goals are to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. Medical anthropologist Alberto Villoldo, PhD, is an international bestselling author who has researched the shamanic healing practices of the Amazon and Andes for over 25 years. He is the founder of the Four Winds Society, an organization dedicated to the bridging of ancient shamanic traditions with modern medicine and psychology. Wade Davis is a writer, photographer, and filmmaker. Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013, he is currently Professor of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of 23 books, including One River, The Wayfinders, and Into the Silence, and he was the winner of the 2012 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction (formerly the Samuel Johnson Prize), the top nonfiction prize in the English language. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and LMNT. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 3,000 specialty lab tests like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. The Real Story About COVID Vaccines: What We Know, What We Don’t with Dale Harrison

The Real Story About COVID Vaccines: What We Know, What We Don’t with Dale Harrison

The Real Story About COVID Vaccines: What We Know, What We Don’t | This episode is brought to you by Bioptimizers, Thrive Market, and Athletic Greens. There’s no way around it, we’re being bombarded by an insane amount of information when it comes to COVID-19, and not all of it makes sense. As vaccines make their way across the country, the questions are only increasing and it can feel overwhelming to find answers from expert sources. While we don’t have all the answers, we are learning more every day. We’ve seen that for people 15 and older, COVID-19 can double our risk of dying this year. And while we know chronic disease puts us at an increased risk for severity and death, we don’t know why some perfectly healthy people still can’t fight this virus off. We’re seeing that vaccines will be a dramatic help for this virus, helping to reduce the risk of severe symptoms and death, but that they won’t stop transmission. I really wanted to talk to someone in-depth about where we are with COVID-19, what we can count on with the vaccines, and what we still don’t know. I knew Dale Harrison would be the perfect scientist to help me break down this topic. Dale is a senior executive with more than 20 years of experience in the biotech industry. He has held multiple VP and C-level positions with companies in the research tools and molecular diagnostics sectors. Dale currently works as a consultant with companies that are developing new clinical diagnostic platforms, including a company developing a CRISPR-based COVID test for the OTC market, and a metagenomics-based NGS platform for infectious disease testing in the human transplant market. Fasting: Hype Or Ultimate Health Hack? | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, Paleovalley, and Cozy Earth There’s been a lot of buzz about fasting in recent years, but sometimes it can be hard to tell a true health-promoting practice from a trend that lacks any real science behind it. Well I’m here to tell you today that fasting falls into the first category, with plenty of proven benefits to optimize health and slow the symptoms of aging. Fasting also does more than change the physical body. It’s estimated that 30% of our thoughts are about our next meal. Panic Attacks: Biology or Psychology with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Panic Attacks: Biology or Psychology with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Panic Attacks: Biology or Psychology | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Dr. Hyman’s Sleep Master Class   We are living in an age of anxiety; and we know that stress wreaks havoc on our health in so many ways, physiologically, emotionally, and mentally. For many people of all ages, stress can lead to anxiety and debilitating panic attacks. While conventional medicine typically treats anxiety and panic attacks as a diagnosis, Functional Medicine views anxiety and panic attacks as symptoms and seeks to get to the root cause underlying these issues. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating panic attacks. They explore the range of physiological considerations they explore when treating patients who are experiencing panic attacks, as well as how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma can be treated to reduce anxiety and eliminate panic attacks. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.
