What Causes Brain Inflammation And How Can We Fix It?

What Causes Brain Inflammation And How Can We Fix It?

What Causes Brain Inflammation And How Can We Fix It? | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox While inflammation is a natural part of life that serves a beneficial role to protect us and help us heal, systemic inflammation leads to disease. This type of persistent inflammation not only affects the body, it also affects the brain. In fact, neuroinflammation may be linked to everything from Alzheimer’s and dementia to ADD, ALS, depression, and even schizophrenia. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Drs. Daniel Amen and Todd LePine about how the foods we eat, the toxins we’re exposed to, our stress levels, and our genetics are just some of the many aspects that can promote brain inflammation. They also discuss how they work with patients to reduce inflammation in the brain and in the body. Dr. Daniel Amen, has been paving the way for a new type of psychiatry, looking at the actual brain and using an integrative approach to prevent disease and successfully treat it. The Washington Post called Dr. Daniel Amen the most popular psychiatrist in America and Discover Magazine listed his brain imaging research as the top neuroscience story for 2015. He is a double board-certified psychiatrist and ten-time New York Times bestselling author, with such blockbuster books as The End of Mental Illness, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, Healing ADD, Memory Rescue, Change Your Brain, Change Your Grades, and The Daniel Plan, co-authored by Pastor Rick Warren and myself.  Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Baby’s Gut Instinct: Why Having A Healthy Gut Is Critical To Infant Health with Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh

Baby’s Gut Instinct: Why Having A Healthy Gut Is Critical To Infant Health with Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh

Baby’s Gut Instinct: Why Having A Healthy Gut Is Critical To Infant Health | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Primal Kitchen, and Beekeeper’s Naturals Today we’re talking about one of my favorite topics: poop. And we’re finding out that the most important time to pay attention to our poop and what it can tell us about the microbiome is in the earliest months of life. I recently did a really interesting webinar on this topic. It's such a critical aspect of creating lifelong health that I wanted to share it on the podcast, to make sure anyone who missed it had a chance to listen. With the huge rise in inflammatory diseases from obesity and diabetes to autoimmunity and so many more, it’s imperative we look at the gut to optimize whole body health—this is a fundamental piece of Functional Medicine that I’ve been using with my patients for decades.  To dig into the specifics of how we can start kids off with the best health possible, I sat down with Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh. She is leading the work in understanding the infant microbiome, as a nutritional scientist who helps new and expectant moms learn about creating healthy gut bugs in their babies. Dr. Tracy translates her extensive scientific knowledge of breastmilk and the gut microbiome into practical terms to help parents understand how a balanced gut from infancy leads to a healthy immune system and metabolism for life. Dr. Shafizadeh received her PhD in nutritional biology from the University of California, Davis, and spends her free time "loving the guts" out of her two boys. This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Primal Kitchen, and Beekeeper’s Naturals. You can try BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough for 10% off by going to magbreathrough.com/hyman and using the code HYMAN10. (30:23) The long term consequences of having lack of B. infantis and how it can be restored (38:15) How does Evivo work? (45:40) Are probiotics good for you? Fix Your Allergies By Fixing Your Gut And Changing Your Diet with Dr. Cindy Geyer

Fix Your Allergies By Fixing Your Gut And Changing Your Diet with Dr. Cindy Geyer

Fix Your Allergies By Fixing Your Gut And Changing Your Diet | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and MitoPure Seasonal allergies are something we’re all familiar with, whether you’re personally affected or not—and they’re rising in prevalence. Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances in the environment making IgE antibodies that trigger mast cells to release histamine. High histamine levels cause symptoms like itchy watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, headaches, and more. Conventional treatments may help reduce symptoms temporarily, but they often include steroids which can be detrimental to your immune system, may contribute to osteoporosis, and, most importantly, don’t address the root cause of the immune dysregulation. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses seasonal allergies with Dr. Cindy Geyer. They talk about how our early life informs the immune system and what steps parents can take to ensure a healthy gut flora and healthy immune system, right from the start. They also discuss ways to address the root cause of the allergy symptoms using diet, supplements, stress reduction, and more. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. She joined The Ultrawellness Center in 2021 after practicing and serving as the medical director at Canyon Ranch for 23 years. She has served on the Board of Directors for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and is a recently elected fellow of ACLM. Dr. Geyer has been a core faculty member at The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) for 20 years, teaching physicians and other healthcare professionals how to use food and lifestyle to address health concerns in their own lives and those of their patients. A clinician, educator, and avid hiker, she is passionate about collaborative approaches to health and wellness: from the integrative team model in working with individual patients, to community partnerships that together can affect healthy changes in the places people live and work. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and MitoPure. Rupa Health is a place for Functional Medicine practitioners to access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, Great Plains, and more. In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Geyer discuss: How your environment since birth informs your immune system Why over-the-counter allergy medications that include steroids can help in the short term, but may have negative long term implications Benefits of breast milk and vaginal seeding in preventing and reducing allergies How addressing other issues in the body can help to reduce allergies Why the low histamine diet is a consideration for people who have severe allergies Supplements to support the body and immune system Stress reduction techniques that help support the nervous system Worms as a treatment option for allergies Nature’s medicine to calm the nervous system and stabilize the immune system Additional Resources The Problem With Our Vanishing Bacteria https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/05/21/the-problem-with-our-vanishing-bacteria/ What Does Your Microbiome Have to Do With Soil? https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/05/17/what-does-your-microbiome-have-to-do-with-soil/ What is Leaky Gut and How Can You Treat It? https://drhyman.com/blog/2020/03/20/podcast-hc2/ Behind the Scenes with Ara Katz, Pioneering Microbiome Entrepreneur, Mom, and Co-Founder of Seed https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/11/26/behind-the-scenes-with-ara-katz-pioneering-microbiome-entrepreneur-mom-and-co-founder-of-seed/ Supporting the Vaginal Microbiome, the Root Cause of Acne, and Why Your Dog Has Leaky Gut with Kiran Krishnan https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/09/12/bb-ep71/ Getting to Know Your Gut Bugs: Akkermansia Muciniphila https://drhyman.com/blog/2021/07/26/akkermansia-muciniphila/ Books mentioned in this episode An Epidemic of Absence by Moises Valesquz-Manoff Missing Microbes by Martin Blaser Hosted on Acast. Is Dairy Good For Us?

Is Dairy Good For Us?

Is Dairy Good For Us? | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox We have no biological requirement for dairy, and yet, we’ve been told over and over again that this food is a great source of calcium and that milk makes healthy bones and we should drink it daily. However, the research shows that none of this is true. In fact, close to 70 percent of the world’s population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products—a problem known as lactose intolerance. But even if you aren’t lactose intolerant, consuming dairy can lead to weight gain, bloating, acne, gas, allergies, eczema, brittle bones, and sometimes even cancer. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses why he often works with patients to eliminate dairy in conversations with his colleagues Lisa Dreher and Dr. Elizabeth Boham. He also speaks with Dr. David Ludwig about his recent research on milk and dairy products. Lisa Dreher is a registered dietitian who got her undergraduate nutrition degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed a dietetic internship through Cornell University. Lisa first worked in the acute care hospital setting and became a Clinical Nutrition Specialist working in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. At the same time, she pursued her Masters degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and started practicing integrative and functional nutrition in private practice before joining UWC in 2015. She has since received additional training through the Institute for Functional Medicine.  Over the past 10 years, Lisa has delivered several public health lectures on the role of food as medicine and her work has been showcased in Reader’s Digest, on National Public Radio, and she was featured in the Broken Brain 2 series. She also developed the Digestive Health and Gut Microbiome training module for the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine practice group through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. David S. Ludwig, MD, PhD is an endocrinologist and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital. He holds the rank of Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Ludwig is co-director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center and founder of the Optimal Weight for Life program, one of the country’s oldest and largest clinics for the care of overweight children.    For more than 25 years, Dr. Ludwig has studied the effects of dietary composition on metabolism, body weight, and risk for chronic disease. Described as an “obesity warrior” by Time Magazine, Dr. Ludwig has fought for fundamental policy changes to improve the food environment. He has been a Principal Investigator on numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and philanthropic organizations and has published over 200 scientific articles. Dr. Ludwig was a Contributing Writer at JAMA for 10 years and presently serves as an editor for The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and The BMJ.
