The Most Important Molecule for Health You Have Never Heard Of: Nitric Oxide with Dr. Louis Ignarro

The Most Important Molecule for Health You Have Never Heard Of: Nitric Oxide | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeeper’s Naturals What if I told you one single thing could work as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neurotransmitter, and vasodilator and that it helps promote memory and learning, increase arousal in both men and women, protect against sun damage and skin cancer, and regulate digestive enzymes and hormones? You’d want some of that, wouldn’t you? Well, nitric oxide is capable of all of this and more. Our bodies naturally produce this molecule but, due to lifestyle factors, some of us make more than others. Luckily for us, there are many things we can do to increase our nitric oxide levels and reap the health benefits.  Today I’m honored to sit down and talk with the man who actually discovered nitric oxide, Dr. Louis Ignarro. Dr. Ignarro is a medical research scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his breakthrough discovery of nitric oxide and how it positively impacts health and longevity. His groundbreaking research on nitric oxide paved the way for—among other innovations—Viagra. He is an award-winning Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has his Ph.D. in Pharmacology with over 35 years of experience teaching.  This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeeper’s Naturals. How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Kettle & Fire Changes in environmental mercury levels have been dramatic in recent decades; industrial exposure to mercury is significant and mostly comes from coal-burning and chlor-alkali plants. The more mercury we are exposed to, the more we are likely we are to be toxic. The main ways that humans are exposed to mercury are from contaminated fish and dental amalgams or silver fillings. And while some of us are very good at detoxifying mercury and other toxins, some people have genetic variations (called polymorphisms) that make them more prone to metal toxicity. Mercury can affect nearly all your organs, especially the brain, heart, kidneys, and gut, and many chronic diseases may be caused or worsened by mercury, including neurologic disease, ADHD, autism, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and more. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss how they test for, diagnose, and treat mercury toxicity. Dr. Hyman also shares his own personal experience recovering from mercury poisoning. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Kettle & Fire. New members to  ButcherBox can get two New York Strip steaks and two pounds of wild-caught Alaskan salmon for free in your first box when you sign up at Butcherbox.com/farmacy.  Kettle & Fire is now offering 25% off its bone broth plus free shipping. Just head over to kettleandfire.com/hyman and use the code HYMAN. In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham discuss: Why mercury toxicity is often overlooked and ignored Dr. Hyman’s personal experience with mercury poisoning Mercury’s effects on the body How mercury can be passed through the placenta and breast milk Main sources of mercury, including coal-burning facilities, fish consumption, mercury dental fillings Safely removing mercury fillings Effectively testing for mercury levels Patients with mercury toxicity that they have treated Boosting your body’s natural detoxification pathways Additional Resources: How To Get Lethal Mercury Out Of Your System https://drhyman.com/blog/2010/06/07/how-to-get-lethal-mercury-out-of-your-system/ Mercury Detox – A 3-Step Plan to Recover Your Health https://drhyman.com/blog/2010/06/01/mercury-detox-a-3-step-plan-to-recover-your-health/ Mercury: Get This Heavy-Metal Poison Out of Your Body https://drhyman.com/blog/2010/05/20/mercury-get-this-poison-out-of-your-body/ Get These Toxins Out Of Your House https://drhyman.com/blog/2016/07/25/get-these-toxins-out-of-your-house/ Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story https://drhyman.com/blog/2021/02/12/podcast-hc43/ How Lead And Other Environmental Toxins Are Affecting Us https://drhyman.com/blog/2020/12/04/podcast-minisode65/

How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected

How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected

How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp Racial and ethnic disparities are sadly alive and well when it comes to health outcomes, land ownership, and how food is grown in the US. White farmers are at an overwhelming advantage when it comes to owning land and they see the greatest benefit from the 97% of the income generated by it. Additionally, lack of access to land and fresh food is a form of oppression that sets communities up for generational illness and strife. These are serious racial and ethnic inequalities happening in our current day and age, but they stem from the long-standing structural discrimination that our agricultural system is rooted in. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman explores these topics with Karen Washington and Leah Penniman. Karen Washington is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Karen serves on the boards of the New York Botanical Gardens, SoulFire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Why Hunger, and Farm School NYC. Karen shares her inspiring story of how starting a garden in her backyard in The Bronx led her to understand the bigger issues of food insecurity in underserved communities. As a former physical therapist looking into her patients’ health, she noticed Black and Brown clients were suffering with poor diet and inaccessibility to healthy foods, while white communities were not.  Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land.  As Co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs—including farmer training for Black and Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Her book, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land is a love song for the land and her people.   From a young age, Leah had a deep reverence for nature and the land. This led her to learn about historical regenerative farming practices and share that knowledge with others. It also led her to a greater understanding of our food system and why it’s a major propellor in racial inequality. President Johnson’s 1865 overturn of General William Sherman’s “40 acres and a mule” Order had massive implications for the future of Black farmers that we are still feeling the consequences of today.  This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To FIx It with Dr. George Papanicolaou

What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To FIx It with Dr. George Papanicolaou

What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To Fix It | This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth and Belcampo Constipation is an often uncomfortable and extremely prevalent condition affecting close to 80 million people. And while constipation might be common, it is definitely not normal and it can have disastrous consequences. Having healthy digestion and eliminating waste every day (ideally twice or three times a day!) is critical to your overall health. Your liver flushes out toxins and dumps them into your intestines. However, if your digestive system isn’t working optimally, then all those toxins and waste can get reabsorbed into your body. So, it makes sense that constipation has been linked to multiple diseases, including cancer and even Parkinson’s disease, plus it actually makes you feel like crap! In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the importance of getting to the root cause of constipation. They share information on the most common drivers of constipation including diet, chronic stress, antibiotic overuse, and a wide range of many other issues.  George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth and Belcampo. Cozy Earth makes it super easy to try out their products with a 30-day free trial and 10-year warranty. Healing Foods That Taste Great

Healing Foods That Taste Great

Healing Foods That Taste Great | This episode is brought to you by Belcampo The more we can learn about using food as medicine, the more power we have to reach our health goals. Food has the power to prevent and reverse disease; there can be so many powerful (and delicious) benefits waiting for you in each bite. There are powerful compounds in foods—like curcumin, genistein, catechins, lycopene, resveratrol, quercetin—that have medicinal impacts on the body. By keeping flavor and health benefits on the same parallel, we can feed the body, mind, and soul with each well-planned bite. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Chef David Bouley and Dr. William Li about how we can cook our way out of illness by aligning our foods to feed our health and get incredible flavor and variety all at once.  Among many accolades, Chef David Bouley earned several four-star reviews in The New York Times; seven James Beard Foundation awards for best restaurant and best chef; he was named “Best Chef in America” by Herald-Tribune; he received the TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Awards “The Best Restaurant in the United States” and #14 in the world; a 29 out of 30 rating in Zagat, and ranked #1 in New York City for many years. Chef Bouley is known as one of the most health-conscious chefs in the world, with a strong focus for diners with health concerns. He is currently contracted for a new book, Living Pantry, that will provide the building blocks for home cooking to deliver great taste and health benefits with easy execution. William Li, MD, is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. His groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity. His TED Talk, “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” has garnered more than 11 million views. An author of over 100 scientific publications in leading journals such as Science, the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and more, Dr. Li has served on the faculties of Harvard, Tufts, and Dartmouth Medical School.
