An uncomfortable insight into the life of female surgeon

*Trigger warning this episode mentions experience of sexual harassment*

On this episode of the KICPOD Steph and Laura had the pleasure of speaking with Australian surgeon and author Neela Janakiramanan. They chatted with Neela about her upcoming novel ‘The Registrar’ which was inspired by her personal experiences throughout her surgical training and unpacks the cost of success in the medical industry. Neela talks to the harsh reality of the surgical profession and how she had to endure sexual harassment, burnout and mental health deterioration to achieve success.

This conversation provides an uncomfortable insight into the lives of budding surgeons whilst also reminding us of the importance of implementing tactics to support our mental health in the workplace. Neela also provides some wonderful advice on how we can best manage ourselves in high pressure environments and how we can ensure we’re truly switching off when we’re away from work.

Neela’s novel The Registrar can be pre-ordered at Booktopia.

Can you be 100% present at work when you’re a parent?

Can you be 100% present at work when you’re a parent?

Ellen Pompeo (aka Meredith from Grey’s Anatomy) was on Call Her Daddy recently and said it’s impossible to be 100% present at work if you’re a mother because there will always be a part of you that’s thinking about your kid(s). Steph recommended the episode last week and Laura listened so we could unpack it together. Plus we speak about the news of Ellen’s $20 million dollar contract and why we hate women speaking about money. Also - it’s Easter this weekend and let this be your reminder that you don’t have to “earn” chocolate or “work it off” afterwards. Let’s stop asking if people are pregnant

Let’s stop asking if people are pregnant

We’ve got a bit going on this week! First up - a group of content creators, founders & podcasters (mostly women) were invited to Canberra to attend the Budget lock-up and were dismissed as "self-obsessed Gen-Z and millennial influencers". We share our feelings about the term "influencer" and how we feel when it's applied to us. Plus we share some of the rogue DMs we’ve received recently. Someone told Laura she looked pregnant which inspired us to chat about the pressure women feel to suck their tummies in. And can men and women be friends? Not according to someone who saw Josh at a concert with his best (female) mate and messaged Steph about it.
