Remember The Game? #40 - WWE SmackDown! Here Comes The Pain

Remember The Game? #40 - WWE SmackDown! Here Comes The Pain

It's WrestleMania week! This is like the Stanley Cup Finals/World Series/Super Bowl for wrestling fans, so I figured it was the right time to jump back into the world of wrasslin' video games. We've already covered the iconic WWF: No Mercy, and it's dimwitted cousin WWF Attitude. This week, we leaping forward to the Playstation 2 and another of the most beloved wrestling games of all-time; WWE SmackDown! Here Comes The Pain... Featuring the cover athlete BROOOOOCCKKKK.....LESSSSSSNAAAAARRRRRR! (That's for you current WWE fans) I won't lie, my heart belongs to the Nintendo 64 when it comes to wrestling games. Not just No Mercy, either. All the THQ games from that system (going back as far as WCW World Tour), stole countless hours from my childhood. They may not have had the deepest career modes of all-time, but the controls were perfect, and the multiplayer was legendary. I loved those games. I bought the first couple SmackDown! titles when they released on the original PlayStation, but they didn't hook me in the same way. Once the SmackDown series made it's leap to the PlayStation 2, it really hit it's stride. Shut Your Mouth was pretty good, but Here Comes the Pain is - in my opinion - the definitive title of the PS2, the SmackDown series, and early 2000's pro wrestling. It really played a big role in shifting the wrestling video game genre toward a more simulation style game, being able to work on specific body parts during a match and seeing the damage that has been done to each leg, arm, etc. It pumped steroids into the THQ grapple engine everyone knew and loved. It really took the gameplay to the next level, and aside from the obvious graphical enhancements, I remember this feeling like the first game that was taking full advantage of a more powerful console (the PS2 as opposed to the original PlayStation). I love the career mode in this game, too. I like the tight menu, no walking around. You pick what you want to do between matches, and it happens. Its the KISS method - Keep It Simple, Stupid. It also introduced the Elimination Chamber to video games, and I found that as fun as I did ladder matches when they were first introduced back in WWF No Mercy. It was the first time bra and panties matches were playable too, but, yeah... It has a great roster, plucked from a great time in pro wrestling. Tight controls, great graphics, fun career mode, Here Comes The Pain checks all the right boxes. I haven't played it in a long time, but doing a little homework for this episode brought back a lot of great memories. This is unquestionably one of the crown jewels of the wrestling video game library, and my buddy Andre joined me this week to help explain why. Enjoy the podcast, and enjoy WrestleMania, fellow nerds. It's still real to me dammit.

And yep, I get it now. MLF is awesome. The football itself is fine. Personally I prefer Tecmo Bowl for my retro football fix, but this is adequate. Where Mutant League Football shines is, well, the mutants. Decapitating opponents, bribing (or murdering) refs, and pushing your opponents into outer space are just some the things that set this game apart from other classic football titles. Add in a great playoff mode, the ability to win games by killing too many of the other team's players, and some pretty solid gross out humour, and you have a game that's playable in 2025 as it was in 1993.My guest this week is the official referee of RTG, Mike The Ref. We had a great time taking some shots at NFL fans while laughing it up over all the insanity that is Mutant League Football. I get why all you Sega kids are so proud of these games now, and I can PROMISE you Mutant League Hockey is getting some airtime at RTG Industries sooner than later. And before we slaughter some ref, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week we compare the PS3/Xbox 360 wars to the SNES/Genesis battles of the 90's. Is there any chance we get as second Mario Kart game this generation?? And why am I a Broncos fan??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! And Super Metroid is fucking special. Some will argue this isn't just the best game on the SNES, but the best Metroidvania game ever made. From the atmosphere, to the music, to the controls (minus the wall jumping), Super Metroid doesn't really have a weakness. It's unquestionably one of the biggest NES to SNES leaps ever, and as a listener pointed out, it not only launched the Metroidvania genre, but it still does Metroidvania-ing better than games that came after it. Masterpiece is all that applies here.My boy Dan from Dissect That Film returns to this week to talk about his favourite game of all time, Super Metroid. The first RTG dedicated to Super Metroid was fun, but the audio was bad, even by our low standards. So we're here to right that wrong and give Samus the episode she deserves. And before we hunt bounties, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks what, if any, success I've had advertising RTG on the internet. Am I planning to play Kirby Air Riders? And what am I hoping to see out of the Gears of War movie??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This is absolutely one of the best run 'n gun games I've ever played. It's an arcade game, and it took me a little while to wrap my head around the idea that I was gonna die. A lot. But once I got over my fear of death I found myself lost in this game's charm, silly smooth graphics, and hella fun gameplay. This was my first Metal Slug, but it won't be my last.My guest this week is a living legend in the world of RTG, my pal Chris. He has been bugging me since episode 1 to cover Metal Slug 3, and I finally get why. We had a scare this afternoon where we thought we had lost the review audio, but everything wrapped up in a neat little PACKAGE and I can't wait for you to let us convince you to play this game. And before we turn into zombies, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week we talk about specific controllers for specific games. If I could get Shigeru Miyamoto to autograph one item, what would it be? And am I excited about the upcoming Bubsy collection???Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! But what about a game that isn't bad, but isn't good? It's just kinda, there? That's how I'd describe WCW Mayhem. The glory days of WCW were long gone by the time Mayhem dropped. THQ was taking their Revenge engine and turning it into WWF WrestleMania 2000, and EA picked up the bony remains of World Championship Wrestling to make a new wrestling game. The end result was Mayhem, a competent wrestling game with little replay value and a barebones career mode.I'm rolling solo this week, and while I still had fun playing WCW Mayhem, it made for a tricky review because there just isn't a lot of meat on the bone. But between the engine, ranting about Hulk Hogan, comparing it to other games from that era, and reminiscing about WCW as a whole, I managed to pry a 3-star match out of our game this week. And before we hit the ring, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I think the big jumps in console generations are a thing of the past? What's my favourite WCW match? And where do I stand on the Pikmin series?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Blank Ranks Vol. 1 - My Top 10 Marvel Superheroes

Apologies everyone, a last minute delay in this week's RTG had me scrambling for a fill-in. Every second Friday over on Patreon, I drop an episode of Blank Ranks, where I do an arbitrary list of something random. The first episode went live a couple months ago and I counted down my 10 favourite Marvel Superheroes, and here it is for free for the internet to listen to and argue about. RTG will be back next week!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I played it for the first time the month and thought I liked it enough, but some of you worship it like Special K!If you never played it back in '99, Soul Reaver is a little Zelda-ish. Some action, some puzzle solving, a dash of metroidvania. You play as a dude that got killed and is brought back for revenge, and you regularly swap between the physical and spirit realms to solve puzzles and kick ass. It's a little cryptic and confusing at times, and it definitely has a PSOne camera, but I liked it.My buddy Daniel just finished his first run through Soul Reaver as well, so he gave me an early morning call to talk about it. We both gave it decent scores, but I feel like we were a little harder on it than I expected it be. Have a listen and see what you think, why dontcha? And before we Reav some Souls, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if there's any gaming franchises out there that have never fucked up? What's an average day in the world of Adam Blank like? And would I ever do another episode where I'm playing the game while we review it?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Expansion Pass #242 - Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Spoiler-Free Review

I had to skip RTG this week due to recording conflicts with my guests and summer holidays, but fortunately we have HUNDREDS or bonus podcasts on our Patreon to pull from to make sure you still get your fix. This episode originally aired for our Patreons back in February, and it's my spoiler-free review of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. I did tack a short spoiler-cast on at the end, but I'll warn you about 10 times and play music before it starts, so you're safe to listen either way. Enjoy the freebie and we'll be back next week!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

As a kid I found Dream Land too easy and it scarred me, but as I've gotten older I've grown to appreciate the simplicity that is a Kirby game. And while it isn't his best work, Kirby's Dream Land 2 is a beautiful walk through a puke-green park.Dream Land 2 takes everything the OG Dream Land game did and makes it better. Animal sidekicks with more power abilities. Way more levels. Save files. Optional collectibles. This game isn't making my top 10 of all-time list or anything, but for a Game Boy game, it's pretty damned ambitious. Our resident Game Boy junkie, Patrick, is my guest this week. While we both agreed that Dream Land 2 did a lot to build on the base of the first game, we found ourselves ranking the two in different orders. Honestly, I think we were both a little harder on this game than we intended to be, but we righted through ship with some solid scores at the end.And before we start swallowing, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks which Simpsons character would best fit in with Super Smash Bros? Someone asks how I feel about another popular "gaming" channel. And what's with my horrible @memberthegame social media handle?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too!
