Krista Tippett - The Transformative Power of Language

Krista Tippett - The Transformative Power of Language

Thomas is joined by Peabody Award-winning broadcaster, New York Times bestselling author, and the host of On Being, Krista Tippett.

They discuss the virtues of hospitality, humility, and creativity in spirituality, and in creating spaces where deep subjects and emotions can safely emerge. Krista explains how her upbringing and work as a journalist have shown her the need for human civilization to outgrow our binary ways of thinking and have the courage to hold contradictions and complexities.

She and Thomas explore how humanity can mature and spiritually evolve, starting from within ourselves and our bodies, and expanding into an understanding of the shared traumas of our past. They discuss the continuing legacy of racial trauma that began with slavery, and how the progress of civil rights is being impeded by our collective unwillingness to fundamentally change our way of life.

Krista maintains, despite the horrors of history, that “hope is not wishful thinking,” but a necessary trait of those who inspire us to transform for the better.

Krista Tippett is a Peabody Award-winning broadcaster, a National Humanities Medalist, and a New York Times bestselling author. She attended Brown University and became a journalist and diplomat in Cold War Berlin. After studying theology at Yale Divinity School in the early 1990s, she saw a black hole where intelligent public conversation about the religious, spiritual, and moral aspects of human life might be. She launched Speaking of Faith — later On Being — as a weekly national public radio show in 2003. What launched on two radio stations grew to over 400 across the U.S. and has received the highest honors in broadcasting, the Internet, and podcasting.

The Great Detox

The Great Detox

What happens when we see our individual struggles reflected in humanity’s collective crises? How does our individual healing create collective healing? This week, Thomas shares why we need to unearth the trauma that’s deeply entrenched in our societies and cultures so that it can be processed, integrated, and transformed into growth. We may be familiar with this process in our own healing journey—now it’s time to do the work as a collective.Thomas explores a technique that he calls “systemic sensing,” a way of feeling through archaeological and ancestral layers to bring regulation to the collective nervous system as we reckon with global challenges. This episode is an invitation to be a part of a global detox—a difficult but essential process that can generate post-traumatic learning, development, and even flourishing.✨ Click here to watch the video version of this episode on YouTube:👉 https://youtu.be/PRGd0R6yKCoVideo episodes are typically posted at 8am PT/ 11am ET✨ Sign up for updates by visiting our website:👉 https://pointofrelationpodcast.com Thomas Hübl, PhD, is a renowned teacher, author, and international facilitator who works within the complexity of systems and cultural change, integrating the core insights of the great wisdom traditions and mysticism with the discoveries of science. Dr. Judith Lewis Herman | Understanding Complex PTSD

Dr. Judith Lewis Herman | Understanding Complex PTSD

“For complex PTSD, you have to establish a relationship. And only after trust has been established can you do the trauma-focused work.”This week, Thomas sits down with Dr. Judith Lewis Herman, an author and senior lecturer in psychiatry and Harvard Medical School, to explore her groundbreaking work on the psychology and social and cultural aspects of Complex PTSD, or CPTSD. Unlike the better-known diagnosis of PTSD, CPTSD arises from prolonged, repeated trauma that erodes one’s sense of self and ability to trust. So, how should we approach healing and therapy for this uniquely challenging diagnosis?Dr. Herman believes there is hope, and it comes from the healing power of relationships…a tough pill to swallow for those whose trauma arose from abusive or coercively controlling relationships. But therein lies the key to healing—a therapeutic bond where the patient’s experience is validated, their safety is paramount, and trust is carefully built up through mutuality. But it’s not just therapy where healing can occur. Thomas and Dr. Herman discuss the importance of acknowledgment for people who’ve experienced ongoing trauma and how lifting shame from victims and survivors and transferring it to the perpetrators is an essential shift with powerful healing potential. They also explore social movements, like the women's and civil rights movements, that can lead to helpful reforms and the development of new support systems for trauma survivors.✨ Click here to watch the video version of this episode on YouTube:👉 https://youtu.be/HcTmrzBQ2GUVideo episodes are typically posted at 8am PT/ 11am ET✨ Sign up for updates by visiting our website: 👉 https://pointofrelationpodcast.com ✨ Judith Lewis Herman, M.D., is a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and was Director of Training at the Victims of Violence Program at Cambridge Hospital.
