Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs - What If We Were All Rated?

Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs - What If We Were All Rated?

I’m taking aim at Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow first introduced the concept of a hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper, titled "A Theory of Human Motivation.” The point was to showcase that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. What I want you to pay attention to and consider is that Maslow showed us what we tend to do. Not what is best. He was just reporting. Yet as a culture we seem to have taken his reporting of what we tend to do as what we should do. When I go to the coffee shop and pass the pastries I tend to want one. If I was a caveman I’d just take one and eat to survive. However, I’m not a caveman. I don’t at all need that pastry and the sugar and gluten would not serve me best, so I pass it by. Most of the time. I’m not a total masochist. But I’ve evolved beyond survival. But as a culture we still look to the basic needs as our priority and even our status symbols. What if our level of self-actualization, self worth and relational was as apparent as our ability to job, money and belongings? Maslow’s pyramid I find more valuable as a relic of something we’ve evolved beyond than a guideline. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. 668: What have you achieved that others thought you could not? - Q&A with Richie Norton

668: What have you achieved that others thought you could not? - Q&A with Richie Norton

Having confidence in yourself and faith and support from others is priceless. Yet, there is also something sweet about achieving something others didn’t think you could. Maybe you weren’t so sure either, or maybe you absolutely knew you could do it. The greatest stories are made from the “stupid” ideas that worked, and many worked like magic. What Richie Norton helped us understand in show 663 is that for any new idea to be truly valuable and viable, it must by proxy be “stupid” in that it should be very or at least fairly different than what already exists. If it’s the same as something that already exists and “reasonable”, how can it really be invaluable. Thus I asked this question on Facebook, “Who has achieved something other’s didn’t think was possible or a “wise” move, and you proved them wrong?” And, “What is a business or life idea you’ve had that you or someone else thought (or thinks) might be a stupid idea?” Great, fun responses of course, and Richie joined me to talk through your comments! 667: Michael Hyatt - Achieve More (of what you want) by Doing Less (of what you really don't have to do)

667: Michael Hyatt - Achieve More (of what you want) by Doing Less (of what you really don't have to do)

You are overwhelmed. You have too much to do. So I have a question for you - if you could wave a magic wand, would you rather get more done or have less to do? Productivity messages generally focus on getting efficient to get more done. But the greats of our present day and history don’t...do more. They figure out ways to spend more time doing what only they can do. Their art, in essence. Michael Hyatt joins us on The Ziglar Show for the third time, our first guest to do so. His new book is titled, “Free To Focus” - Achieve More By Doing Less. Want the punch line? The primary problem for most of us is we take on too much and don’t eliminate, automate or delegate enough. We spend time doing tasks that relegate us to a low paid, hourly worker. Why? Michael steps on my own toes by stating it’s often because we think it takes longer to explain it to someone else than to just do it myself, and I don’t think someone else can do it as well. Both may be true, but if I accept that, I’m quickly plateaued in what I can do. And there I sit. Forever under maximized. Friend, this is a convicting and compelling message. From it you will do one of two things: cut down on the things YOU don’t have to do. Again, they may need to get done, but do YOU have to do them. And then spend more time on the important things that you do best. Or you will decide to change nothing, and anchor your progress to where you are now. And since I know you won’t do the latter, then there is nothing more important than listening to and digesting this message! If you don’t know Michael...he’s one of the most influential voices in business. He’s a bestselling author, one of the most successful bloggers...ever. And in truth is a primary leader of...leaders. It’s unreal how many of the people we interview on the show look to Michael for mentorship. 666: Fighting the enemy - Q&A

666: Fighting the enemy - Q&A

Show 666, “The number of the beast!” While I don’t fear a number, I know this number has some weighty baggage that I do not discount. I decided to take the opportunity to hit some hard things head on. Recent headlines cited, "The number of deaths from alcohol, drugs and suicide in 2017 hit the highest level since federal data collection started in 1999." I posted this on Facebook and asked…”Why? What's your take on why this tragedy continues to increase about 4% per year?” The responses were profound and hit on things like, disconnection, hope, social media, relationships, health, higher power, opioids, breakdown of the family, isolation, self-image, loss of identity, tolerance and love. And the question or belief of...is there an enemy? The devil? Corporate greed? Is anything at work against you? Sounds negative, doesn’t it. But knowing what you are up against is necessary in order to come out on top. That’s the focus of this show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

665: Richie Norton’s financial advice: learn how to make money - Habits with Richie Norton

665: Richie Norton’s financial advice: learn how to make money - Habits with Richie Norton

What are the habits of a guy whose fame comes from doing stupid things? Pretty stellar, and showcases how Richie Norton is defining stupid as the New Smart. My favorite spoke on the Ziglar Wheel of Life from Richie? Number four, Financial. Richie says, “Better than budgeting, learn how to make money.” With number six, career and business, his opportunity requirement is he must be able to do it all via his cell phone so his family can stay flexible and mobile. Number five is spiritual and of great interest to me that we unpacked more was Richie’s perspective of loving God...unconditionally. That’s a twist on the norm. 664: How are you coping with emotional strife? - Q&A with Miles Adcox

664: How are you coping with emotional strife? - Q&A with Miles Adcox

You are not emotionally perfect. Neither am I. You have had some level of emotional strife in your life. Me too. So how are you coping with it? That is the question I posted on Facebook. I asked, “What in your life has most affected your emotional health, and how are you coping today?”Trauma, abuse, codependency, addiction, stress, burnout, childhood wounds, shame, family dysfunction, negative labels, other? The responses came in immediately and right off the bat hit issues such as Divorce, angry households, negativity, childhood trauma, birth defects, death of loved ones, domestic violence, addiction, codependency, bullying. But what you want to hear is...how ARE people coping? How are they healing and overcoming and finding success anyway. The topic came from my conversation with Emotional Fitness guru Miles Adcox, our muse in show 659. I’ll admit I am not equipped to address most of these issues and it was a pure gift to have Miles field them with his humility and experienced insight.  Learn more about your ad choices. 663: Richie Norton | Your stupid idea is way smart

663: Richie Norton | Your stupid idea is way smart

Not just a catchy title folks.  In this show we are going to equip you to do something stupid, maybe something you’ve had in mind for a while. Stupid by the world’s standards, that is. Stupid compared to the norm, the conventional and the mediocre. It’s amazing to consider so many of the products, services and empires we all use and believe in, were initially called stupid. Literally. But how do we deal with the critics and doubts and vet the idea to make sure it isn’t truthfully...no good? My guest today is  Richie Norton. Richie is a guy who it seems everyone I respect...knows and reveres. At face value he’s a guy that can help you with your business. But that’s like saying like saying a Ferrari can help you get to the store across town. Well, sure. But that’s not even the tip of the iceberg. Richie has a dramatic story that entails the roots of why he wants to help people live the life they believe in, now. Not later. It’s not just motivation folks, it’s from the trenches of hardship and reality to come to terms with the fragility of our lives. Richie’s book is “The Power Of Starting Something Stupid.” You can find it and more at his website, but I encourage you to get a free guide he has called the 76 Day challenge. Richie has three sons today. But a fourth son lived...76 days. That gives you insight into Richie’s muse and heart. Get it at www.richienorton.com/76daychallenge Learn more about your ad choices. 662: Is admitting really the first step? - Q&A

662: Is admitting really the first step? - Q&A

What is a negative truth about yourself you would like to change? We hear a short clip from Zig Ziglar about his past. A past where he referred to himself as, and had his kids call him, fat boy. Why? Because he was overweight. He then talks about how we see ourselves. From This I asked on Facebook, “What is a negative truth about yourself you would like to change?” It was a question I was concerned would not get much response. Instead I got inundated with incredibly frank responses. Here is a sampling: I'm impatient, I react emotionally to everything, I keep reacting poorly to my wife, I'm waiting for things to be perfect, I create too much drama, I procrastinate, I struggle to balance optimism vs reality, I build a wall and don't know how to have meaningful relationships...it keeps going. The struggle truly is real.” Those are just clips, you will want to hear the details of what people shared. Just tremendous. From this the question that arose was this, “Is admitting really the first step?” That’s the age old cliche’, isn’t it? So now that you are aware and actually admit, are you a step closer to changing? I had Michelle Prince join me to talk through your comments and this issue.  Learn more about your ad choices.
