What Is the Top Speed of a Broom in Harry Potter? - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. In today's video, we're going to be discussing wizarding transportation. Not via the floo network, not via apparition, and certainly not by Hippogriff - but by broomstick. Of course- in the muggle world a broomstick has a very different function, but to a witch or wizard- they see an opportunity to fly- a means of getting from point A to point B. But they're not only used in every day life- they're also used in sport- notably Quidditch. Without broomsticks the game of quidditch would cease to exist, and wouldn't that be awful. Brooms are brought to the forefront of our minds right near the beginning of the first book/film, when Hagrid first brings Harry to Diagon Alley. In complete awe of everything around him, Harry pauses for a moment as he walks past 'Quality Quidditch Supplies', Diagon Alley's premier broom shop. It's also in this moment that he overhears other young witches and wizards going berzerk over a broom in the window: "Wow! Look at it! The new Nimbus 2000!" And from that moment Harry was intrigued.Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory

Was Narcissa Malfoy EVIL? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing whether or not Narcissa Malfoy was indeed evil.Narcissa Malfoy was born Narcissa Black, making her a descendent of the proud wizarding family, the House of Black. Known for their pureblood supremacist views and radical prejudice towards Muggles and mix-blood witches and wizards, many members of the Black family certainly have a reputation for being--well, evil. Most notably would be Narcissa's sister Bellatrix Lestrange, mistress of Lord Voldemort himself, and without a doubt the MOST evil witch of her time. But simply being an immediate relation to someone like Bellatrix doesn't make you evil. ...Watch the video to dive in further!Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How Did Harry Resist the Imperius Curse? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing how Harry was able to resist the Imperius Curse in the fourth instalment of the series: The Goblet of Fire.It is here--in both the novel and film--that we are first introduced to the three Unforgivable Curses. They are the Imperius Curse, the Cruciatus Curse, and the Killing Curse, all of which were taught to Harry and his fellow students by that year's Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Mad-Eye Moody--who, as we later discover--was actually Barty Crouch Jr. impersonating Mad-Eye. And so, it was during one of the fake Professor Moody's lessons, that he instructed the class on the Imperius Curse, a spell rooted in the dark arts which gives the caster the ability to control the mind and actions of another witch or wizard. However, not only did Mad-Eye Moody teach the students about this curse throughout the course of the lesson, he then actually performed it on the students--a little odd but--if a pretend Professor Moody can be believed--this was in fact a direct request of Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. So, what can you do?Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How Did Wormtail Stay Transfigured for YEARS? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing how Peter Pettigrew AKA Wormtail--former Marauder and friend, turned traitorous Death Eater--managed to STAY transfigured for as long as he did. Peter Pettigrew, known by those closest to him as Wormtail, attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1970s at the same time as Harry Potter's father, James. As both Peter and James were in Gryffindor House together, the pair--alongside Sirius Black and Remus Lupin--became inseparable friends. The four housemates even came up with a name for their little gang: The Marauders. And, as you may have guessed or already known, they were, of course, the ones responsible for creating the mischievous and magical Marauder's Map. Why Didn't Dumbledore Tell Harry About Basilisk Fangs? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing why in Merlin's Beard Dumbledore didn't share his knowledge about Basilisk fangs with Harry before he died--something which would've arguably made things much easier for Harry, Ron and Hermione as they attempted to knock off Voldemort's Horcruxes. Now Basilisks--and their fangs--first came to our attention in the second instalment of the series: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Sometimes referred to as the King of Serpents, this enormous reptilian creature was first bred by the Dark Wizard Herpo the Foul. The Basilisk that guarded the Chamber of Secrets was once owned by founding member of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin. Is Butterbeer...ALCOHOLIC? - Harry Potter Explained

Is Butterbeer...ALCOHOLIC? - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing the much beloved wizarding world beverage Butterbeer and whether or not this "beere" truly has any alcohol content or not.I'll start off today's topic by acknowledging that the Butterbeer served in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter--that is, the themed Universal Park based on the franchise--does NOT have any alcohol in it whatsoever. Whether you order it hot, cold, or frozen, it will be completely devoid of any alcohol, presumably so that chil*dren of all ages can come and enjoy this famous magical drink. What's interesting about this is that the Park won't even let you add your own alcohol to it--as all drinks must remain as they were created...! So, for those of you who may be hoping to one day live out your dream of drinking the afternoon away on Butterbeer, that dream won't be realized in Florida's Universal Park! As for the books, we are first introduced to the idea of this delicious-sounding drink in The Prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry Potter and his friends first venture to Hogsmeade, the wizarding village found near Hogwarts. In this instalment of the series, we learn that Butterbeer is a common drink in the wizarding world that's "a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch" but in beverage form. From what we know, it's served at The Three Broomsticks, Hog's Head and Diagon Alley's The Leaky Cauldron. Typically, Butterbeer is served in foaming hot mugs or in cold bottles. At the Hog's Head, customers pay two silver Sickles for a Butterbeer, which is about GBP0.60. But it's unclear whether this is the standard rate for the drink, or just the Hog's Head price.Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How the Hogwarts House Points System REALLY Works - Harry Potter Explained

How the Hogwarts House Points System REALLY Works - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing how the House Points System at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry REALLY works. To start things off, let's begin with a quote from Professor Minerva McGonagall that summarizes things pretty concisely:"Your triumphs will earn you points, any rule-breaking and you will lose points."While this declaration from Professor McGonagall at the beginning of Harry's first year at Hogwarts does well to succinctly explain its premise, the House Points System is a little bit more complicated than that.Let's dive in to it.Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How Did the Grangers Convert Their Muggle Money - Harry Potter Explained

How Did the Grangers Convert Their Muggle Money - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing how Hermione Granger--and other Muggleborn witches and wizards--were able to convert their Muggle money into the magical currency accepted in the Wizarding World. To start off with, let's take a look at the types of money we're dealing with here. The Granger family, as well as all other witches and wizards born into non-magical families, would've only had access to the Muggle currency used within their native country. Since Hermione Granger was born in England--to two successful dentists, I might add--the money her parents would've earned would've been the British pound sterling. The pound is, of course, the basic monetary unit of the United Kingdom and can be divided decimally into 100 new pence. However, in the Wizarding World a completely different type of money is used as currency, and comes in the following three denominations: bronze Knuts, silver Sickles and golden Galleons. The most valuable of the three is--as you may have guessed--the GOLDEN Galleon, with 17 Sickles making up one Galleon, and 29 Knuts equalling one Sickle. If you're wondering what the conversion rate is between Muggle money and Wizarding money, you're not alone. There are entire websites dedicated to this exact thing! I've taken a deep dive into some of these, and last I checked 1 Galleon was the equivalent of 5 Pounds!Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What Happened to Luna Lovegood's Mother? - Harry Potter Explained

What Happened to Luna Lovegood's Mother? - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing what happened to Luna Lovegood's mother, Pandora Lovegood. As any fan of the Harry Potter series will know, Luna Lovegood was the loyal and incredibly quirky Ravenclaw student who was first introduced to Harry and his friends at the beginning of The Order of the Phoenix. Often described as having her head in the clouds, some classmates went so far as to refer to her as "Loony Lovegood"--a rather unkind nickname meant to reference her eccentric views. The more we learned about Luna throughout the series, the more we understood that she came by her outlandish beliefs all too honestly. Her father, Xenophilius Lovegood, raised her on his own from the time she was nine, and he was quite the eccentric himself. Editor of the rather niche publication The Quibbler, which marketed itself as The Wizarding World's Alternative Voice, Xenophilius would run rather odd articles about things like conspiracy theories and creatures that did not exist. In any case, Xenophilius and Luna lived just the two of them near the village of Ottery St. Catchpole in Devon.Which brings us to today's question: what happened to Luna's mother, Pandora?
