015: Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? | Punk: Attitude (2005)

I'm a sucker for a music doc...

It was time for another music documentary on the pod. Punk: Attitude is one of the most comprehensive journeys into the birth of the punk scene. Featuring: The Stooges, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Siouxie Sioux, Henry Rollins, the Velvet Underground, The Clash, New York Dolls, and more...

As a master of suspense, tension building, and incredible casting there is nothing better in a classic murder mystery story. These are just some of the brilliant aspects of his filmmaking that we still study today. My first watch was when I was super young thanks to my mom. This is one of those stories  that has become a comfort film to me now in my adulthood. Adapted from a play, Dial M for Murder mainly takes place inside the apartment of Tony and Margot Wendice and as the story unfolds it's exciting from moment to moment. Me and Charles love the classics, including Ray Milland (woof) and the etherial and later royal Grace Kelly. We talk the behind the scenes. drama and other casting options, how the fashion came together, and questioned how this whole thing could have been solved by having a keychain on your latch key.Off-topic rants include: Oscars rage segment, the Back to the Future series, scandalous old Hollywood movie themes, and we have a grasshopper interruption about 33 mins in--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! Host: Lauren @lauren_melanie  & Charles @charleshaslamFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

182: You can't rub Ben-Gay on a heartache. | Calendar Girl (1993)

Since Charles has been waiting 30 years to see this film I had fairly reasonable expectations. Thankfully this film you can find on YouTube, but that's about the only place you'll see it. You would think in 1993 a film starring Jason Priestley of 90210 fame involving a road trip to Hollywood would be a smash. Welp, that didn't happen. Most of the time we had no idea what was going on, but we examined this one with today's lens and yikes. We get into why Jerry O'Connell plays the same role over and over, the 60s clothes, and the weirdness of Hollywood 'stalking' Marilyn Monroe in media.Off-topic rants include: Big Brother and The Challenge, Alessandro Nivola, Glen Powell's time to shine, and movies we wanted to walk out of. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! Host: Lauren @lauren_melanie  & Charles @charleshaslamFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

181: It's just a little grass. | Death of a Cheerleader (1994) w/ Dustin of The Rewatch Recap

Another guest in the house for a trip back to the 90s with our patron saint of the 'TV Movie' , Tori Spelling in Death of a Cheerleader (1994). This was a more complicated story than we originally thought. We didn't end up loving the movie version and how they essentially manipulated us in the end, but the acting performances were pretty stellar. This includes another batch of hilarious Letterboxd reviews. We get into why we were shocked that the story devolved the way it did, the pretty realistic but impressive fashion, and some interesting cameos. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! GIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE!Guest: Dustin  of The Rewatch Recap Podcast @therewatchrecap | LinktreeHost: Lauren @lauren_melanieFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

🧵 Fashion Chat: Met Gala looks, Law Roach on The Cutting Room Floor, Galliano galore

Yes, Jai is back here on the pod to talk the recent happenings in fashion but basically we dish some hot topics then straight into our Met Gala recap. We first discuss the status of Hedi Slimane at LVMH, Susie Bubble at System Magazine and our fave mid 2000s bloggers, Law Roach on The Cutting Room Floor Podcast, and then our hits and misses when it comes to the Met looks. Who was and wasn't on theme, why so much Galliano, some menswear we enjoyed.--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! GIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE! Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Jai @jai_stylefactory Music by Den-Mate @imdenmateFollow Fashion Grunge Podcast Substack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

I have seen Queen of the Damned or parts of it so long ago that I basically haven't seen it. OMG. I mean disregard the weird storylines and you have a (dope) 90 minute nu-metal music video with a vampire b-story...awesome. Since it's October and in keeping with the spooky mood we have to talk vampires. Me and Jules had literally the best time talking about this film and discovering all these amazing behind the scenes facts. For the hour we basically complain that there wasn't more Aaliyah (RIP Forever), wish we could pull off these costumes, and talk about how Twilight toootallly was biting the style years later.Off-topic rants: the Aaliyah and Trent Reznor connection, why me and Jules have to produce a nu-metal documentary, ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie &Jules @imdenmateFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

180: Where's your will to be weird, man? | The Doors (1991) [Patreon Unlocked]

It's rare that an actor inhabits a role so much that even the people closest to the real Jim Morrison were confused on whether or not it was really him. In the 1991 film by Oliver Stone Val Kilmer became the legendary lead singer of The Doors.I was ultra stoked to talk about this film because I have a real life super fan of The Doors along for the ride, Jai! We talked about the real story of the band, the conspiracy theories, and wonder why Meg Ryan was cast as Pamela. *first appeared on Patreon May 2022----Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Jai @jai_stylefactoryFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

You, Me and 5 Bucks 016: A chat w/ Meghan Smith of Melody Note Vintage

It's time for another interview series! I've been a student of Meghan's through her insightful TikTok, and I knew that I had to talk to her about being in the epicenter of what became known as 'grunge' in Seattle in the late 80s/90s. We had a time and covered so much ground. Some of the points we chat about include: indie record culture, the death of paper concert tickets, working the famous Nirvana in-store show, and moving to Palm Springs, CA and opening a vintage store. I found out what it's really like to go viral online, views on fashion TikTok and IG, sustainability in fashion, and cap it off with a Henry Rollins anecdote. Enjoy! 🎸👖---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! GIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE!Guest: Meghan Smith of Melody Note Vintage | Instagram | TikTok | LinktreeHost: Lauren @lauren_melanieFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

This has been on the list for both me and Charles since the start of this podcast. During our teenage years we both saw Annie Hall and the filming structure and humor was nothing we had ever seen before. Diane Keaton is a breath of fresh air in this captivating titular character that inspires the fashion industry almost 40 years later. Me and Charles basically quote the entire film and point out the details in cinematography that were so modern for the time and even now few filmmakers master. off-topic rants: male TikTok thirst traps, Jaws, Oscars history minute---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the  Patreon! Host: Lauren @lauren_melanie  & Charles @charleshaslamFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletterInstagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod
