Most dinosaur discoveries focus on skeletons, but trace fossils can reveal how dinosaurs actually lived. In this episode, ichnologist Dr. Anthony J. Martin explains how dinosaur tracks, nests, burrows, coprolites (fossilized dung), gastroliths, and other trace fossils help scientists reconstruct dinosaur behavior that bones alone cannot show.

We explore what trace fossils reveal about dinosaur parenting, herd movement, hunting, swimming, migration, feeding, and nesting, along with the discovery of the first known burrowing dinosaur, Oryctodromeus. Dr. Martin also discusses how paleontologists test hypotheses, why modern birds help explain dinosaur behavior, and how new fossil discoveries continue to reshape dinosaur science.

The conversation also covers famous dinosaur track sites, the challenges of identifying fossil evidence in the field, and how dinosaur research is changing our understanding of prehistoric ecosystems and ancient landscapes.
