This June 24, 2009 free audio episodeincludes an expert interview on low back pain and sacro-iliac joint issues, a bonus interview on a breakthrough supplement for bone healing and stress fractures called "lactoferrin", as well as listener Q&A's on "Tapering for Triathlon" and "Crunchy Craving Snack Substitutes".

This Week's Featured Topic:

Dr. Brian Mather is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. He is the team chiropractor for the Spokane Chiefs Hockey Club and has over 10 years of clinical experience treating high-school, college and professional athletes. He served as chiropractor for the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and is now a contributing writer to Triathlete magazine and an emerging expert in low back pain, especially among the endurance athlete population. During our 15 minute interview, Dr. Mather and I discuss the latest findings on the #1 cause of low back pain among people who are physically active, and the exact steps that can be taken to eliminate the pain related to sacroiliac joint issues (SI joint syndrome). For more information on Dr. Mather, just visit Spokane Sports Chiropractic.

In the second interview, I speak with a gentleman named Jim Dragon about a brand new nutritional supplement that is showing a great deal of promise for bone health and stress fractures. It is called "lactoferrin", and is found in an impressive dietary supplement called Osteodenx, which you can find by clicking here. The ingredients include a cocktail of many of the effective bone-building supplements we've discussed on this show, such as Vitamin D (as cholecalciferol), Folic acid, Zinc (from zinc oxide) , ELF (RNAse enriched-lactoferrin), hyaluronic acid, bromelain, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, Chondroitin sulfate 100 mg and Turmeric root extract. During the interview, you'll hear some impressive statistics and anecodotes about the efficacy of this interesting new capsule.

Also, remember the interview on Ayurvedic Medicine? In this podcast, I also mention how I've been feeling since I started using the "Essence of Life" Fulvic and Humic acids from AmbayaGold.com.

Also in this podcast:

Listener Chuck asks:

I had a couple questions I was hoping you could answer for me for my race next weekend. On Sunday I will be racing Montclair Olympic triathlon in Virginia. The race is on Sunday and I was curious about your recommendations for tapering the week before? Also, what is the best way to train the week after the race - take a day off, get right back into it?

Listener Jane asks:

Now that we're in the middle of the summer, I'm finding myself absolutely craving more calories in between meals, especially from "crunchy" foods, like cracker mixes and banana chips. Are these type of foods healthy for snacking?

I have also received a couple questions about online personal training. So I've answered them in a video. If you watch this video, and you want to find out how I can be your personal fitness or nutrition consultant, just go to http://www.pacificfit.net/bengreenfield.html

Do you have a question? Remember, you can now ask your questions via *audio* to me via the free Skype software by simply "Skyping" me at username "pacificfit". You can also call toll free to 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail for Ben Greenfield.

The Gift Of Failure, The Addiction Inoculation, Making Your Life Your Argument & More

The Gift Of Failure, The Addiction Inoculation, Making Your Life Your Argument & More

If you have teenagers like I do, or have kids that will become teenagers, or are considering having kids that will become teenagers, or even know anyone with a teenager… …you've probably thought about kids and substance abuse. Of course, all parents want to give their kids the best possible resources and support to prevent problems with drugs and alcohol. But what does that look like? Is it teaching moderation or prohibiting substances before the legal age? How much does genetics play into it? Those are big, important questions, considering that according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, teen drug addiction is the nation's largest preventable and costly health problem. And nine out of 10 adults with substance use disorder report they began drinking and taking drugs before age 18. My guest on this podcast, Jessica Lahey, was born into a family with a long history of alcoholism and drug abuse. Despite her efforts to avoid that path, Jessica struggled with alcoholism herself until 2013, when she got sober in her early 40s. Her latest book, The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence, is a comprehensive resource that parents and educators can use to help prevent substance abuse in children. A parent herself, Jessica has also learned firsthand how to navigate this highly sensitive and important topic. Jessica is also the author of the New York Times bestselling book The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed. For more than twenty years, Jessica has taught every grade from sixth to twelfth in both public and private schools, spent five years teaching in a drug and alcohol rehab for adolescents in Vermont, and serves as a prevention and recovery coach at Sana at Stowe, a medical detox and recovery center in Stowe, Vermont. Jessica writes about education, parenting, and child welfare for The Washington Post, The Atlantic, is a book critic for Air Mail, and her biweekly column “The Parent Teacher Conference” for three years at the New York Times. Jessica designed and wrote the educational curriculum for Amazon Kids’ award-winning animated series The Stinky and Dirty Show, and was a 2019 Pushcart Prize nominee for her Creative Nonfiction magazine essay, “I’ve Taught Monsters.” The co-host of the #AmWriting podcast, with bestselling authors KJ Dell’Antonia and Sarina Bowen, Jessica also holds the dubious honor of having written an article that was later adapted as a writing prompt for the 2018 SAT. Jessica will be soon featured in a special chapter of my Boundless Parenting book, for which this podcast interview is part of a series leading up to the official book launch in late 2022. She lives in Vermont with her husband, two sons, and many dogs. Psychedelics, Finding God, Plant Medicine, Entheogens, Spiritual Awakening & Drugs Q&A

Psychedelics, Finding God, Plant Medicine, Entheogens, Spiritual Awakening & Drugs Q&A

Earlier this summer, as you probably heard if you've been following me, I declared that plant medicines were a "big problem"... …and that after a great deal of study, contemplation, and prayer, I decided to put up some big ol' warning signs against the use of mind-altering substances, especially considering their widespread abuse and potential for psychological harm, but perhaps of more concern, the increasing trend to put one's faith for healing, trauma, relationship work, self-discovery, divination, spiritual awakening, and anything of the like in drugs instead of in God.  I also feel that it's my God-given responsibility to educate you on why I made this choice, in the hope not necessarily that you also stop but that you can make an informed decision for yourself. For (many) more details about this topic, you can read the two-part article series that I published in June and listen to my more recent podcast with Josh Trent: The Big Problem With “Plant Medicines”: Part 1 The Big Problem With “Plant Medicines”: Part 2 The Pros And Cons Of Plant Medicines, The Truth About Pharmakia, Spiritual Growth & Much More With Josh Trent Of Wellness + Wisdom. Social media is another important pathway for me to offer thoughts and prompt discussion on this popular topic. My Instagram post announcing my decision in June earned more than 2,500 likes and a wide range of responses in the form of comments, which I appreciate because I put my views out there honestly, and I want you to, also, even if they don't line up with what I'm saying. I don't hold back on my Twitter feed either, which has more than 88,000 followers. Last year, Twitter launched Twitter Spaces, an online forum for live audio conversations. Spaces are another cool way for me to have open and unfiltered discussions about different topics that are on my mind. This latest Twitter Space audio – graciously hosted by @AncestralVril and joined by @CenterHps and @ReclaimMind - goes even deeper into how I got to where I am today with my stance on plant medicine, which, for all its nuance, really comes down to a single belief: you just don't need drugs to talk to God or hear His voice or seek His direction. This was a Q&A that was open to many voices, so you'll hear many opinions other than mine, and I think you'll find the wide range of views quite beneficial for better understanding this topic. "America's Worst Mom" Explains Why We Need More Free-Range Parenting & Less Helicopter Parenting: Let Them Grow

"America's Worst Mom" Explains Why We Need More Free-Range Parenting & Less Helicopter Parenting: Let Them Grow

Lenore Skenazy has been known by the nickname “America’s Worst Mom.” And yet I'm featuring her as a parenting expert in my upcoming Boundless Parenting book. Hear me out... Lenore graduated from Yale in 1981, and earned her master’s degree from Columbia University in 1983. A speaker, blogger, syndicated columnist, and reality show host, Lenore has been featured by national media outlets, including NPR, the New York Daily News, Good Morning America, and NBC News. Until 2008, Lenore was a regular columnist for the New York Sun. Her controversial piece, "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone," received worldwide news coverage and earned her that "Worst Mom" nickname. However, the column also led to the founding of a blog called Free-Range Kids, which is "fighting the belief that our children are in constant danger from creeps, kidnapping, germs, grades, flashers, frustration, failure, baby snatchers, bugs, bullies, men, sleepovers and/or the perils of a non-organic grape." A bestselling book that followed, also called Free-Range Kids, kicked off a movement that promotes childhood independence and resilience as the path for children to grow into capable, confident, and happy adults. Lenore serves as the president of Let Grow, the non-profit organization behind Free-Range Kids. On her television show World's Worst Mom, Lenore trains overprotective parents to give their children more independence and confidence. Lenore Skenazy believes that the concept of helicopter parenting, excessive and often unnecessary worry about safety, and lack of creative and slightly dangerous free play are hampering the health and growth of children. The Pros And Cons Of Plant Medicines, The Truth About Pharmakia, Spiritual Growth & Much More

The Pros And Cons Of Plant Medicines, The Truth About Pharmakia, Spiritual Growth & Much More

Back in June of this year, I made one of the most important decisions of my life. I announced, after much contemplation and prayer, to stop using plant medicines. In a comprehensive two-part article series that provoked a wide range of responses, I detailed my reasoning for reaching this conclusion (you can read Part 1 here and Part 2 here). And while I've returned to reiterate this decision here and there since June, I have not yet - until now - devoted an entire podcast to the subject. Today I'm doing just that, as a guest on my friend Josh Trent's Wellness + Wisdom Podcast. Josh is the CEO and founder of Wellness Force Media, a company that has a mission to help humans heal mental, emotional, and physical health through podcasts, programs, and a global community that believes in optimizing their potential to live life well. Josh has spent the past 19+ years as a trainer, researcher, and facilitator discovering the physical and emotional intelligence for humans to thrive in our modern world. In Josh's words, he has been "bouncing around inside my orbit and consciousness) for 10+ years now, but it took this rather polarizing and controversial topic to bring us together for a real discussion on his Wellness + Wisdom podcast. Now, Josh is not for or against plant medicines. He does believe that plant medicines have special use cases, and that four lifesaving "levers" that need to be taken into account when considering usage: Preparation. Was the plant medicine prepared in a sacred way? Does the shaman or facilitator have the sacred experience and trusted lineage, combined with a pure heart? Setting. Has the space been properly cleared of dark energies, and are all participants aligned with humility and curiosity? Intention. Has the participant done preliminary work to get very clear on their intention, and to not come to the medicine with a disempowered wish? Integration. Is there a pre-, peri-, and post-integration skilled facilitator so the participant will avoid going away with no lessons learned? This podcast episode may ruffle some feathers. But at the end of the day, you are the only one who can answer the profoundly important question of whether or not you will partake in plant medicine. Hopefully, this fascinating conversation with Josh will get you thinking (and if you'd rather watch the video, that's below, too).
