Listener Q&A:

As compiled and read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Audio Question from Chris: We frequently hear about fellow athletes having these profound medical events where they "crash" and it is determined they have a 80-90 percent blockage in an artery! I personally know of two fellow runners who have had this occurrence. Fortunately both survived after open heart surgery. I am amazed that we continually hear about active, well trained athletes who experience near death occurrences in spite of being active. Makes me wonder about all the efforts of preventative healthcare. I understand much of this can be hereditary but am surprised when a well performing athlete crashes with no previous indicators. I am sure that Listeners would be interested if there are test available to screen for life threatening blockages since it appears that it can strike athletes who are training and performing and show no signs in advance. Would a stress treadmill test be an indicator test?

~ In my response to Chris, I mention the HeartMath emWave2. I also mention this article. And (of course) the New England Journal of Medicine's Cardiac Arrest during Long-Distance Running Races.

Audio Question from Tony: Udo Erasmus talks about how when you heat saturated fat you damage them and even if you have a good diet you can't reverse the damage from heated oil. What is your opinion on using it for cooking?

~ Episode #127: Why Saturated Fat Won't Kill You But Vegetable Oil Will

Audio Question from Josh: Trouble during hard efforts during races. Thought he drank too much water during the swim because of thick phlegm and gunk on the bike and run. Doesn't think it is dietary, doesn't take meds, doesn't want to take pseudoephedrine.

Audio Question from Chuck: What is your take on the new protocol "carb back-loading"? Also, you often recommend fasted workouts in the morning to burn fat. How long should you have fasted for that to be beneficial? Can you fast after a workout instead?

Audio Question from Jenny: Went to a GI (gastrointestinal) Doctor for stomach problems and found out that she is celiac and has acid reflux. Was prescribed medication for an entire year and doesn't want to take it (and hasn't been taking it). Is there a supplement or natural food to help with this, rather than taking the meds?

Audio Question from Shane: Recent recipient of a rotator cuff tear and is worried about the length of recovery. Would you use a Tens Unit or Bio Tools? ~ In my response, I mention the injuries section of my recommendations page.

Shaun asks: I am a fairly healthy person but by no means an elite athlete. I find that whenever I make a conscious effort to stick to a 6 week workout program by week 3 I often get sick (cold/flu). I am curious to understand whether or not this is a result of the increased workout causing my body to work overtime in repairing my muscles etc and therefore making me more exposed to germs etc, or is it just coincidence.

~ In my response, I recommend Restwise.

Brenden asks: For some reason, I have a VERY high sweat rate. It's ridiculous in the warmer months. You can't draft behind me. I know most likely a genetic item, yet wanted to ensure there wasn't something homeopathic or completely safe and natural I was missing. I'm clear on how I simply need to hydrate more, supplementing electrolytes and minerals, yet would love to find something that helps me retain this stuff in the first place. Very costly and significant disadvantage in comparison to my more sweat efficient competition. You get the picture.

~ In my response, I recommend Noakes book Waterlogged. I also recommend these Trace Mineral.

Doug asks: I have a question for Graeme Turner. There was a podcast done with Ben and Graemeconcerning running drills. One of the comments that Graeme mentioned was that he had all the cartilage in his knees removed and is now running better than ever. My question concerns my wife, who due to tears and arthritis has either none or little cartilage left in her knees. Graeme is running while my wife can barely walk due to the pain and swelling. What I am trying to find out is how and why. Drills are not really an answer, as I would like to get her walking pain free first. Her knees are really swollen. Steps or angles are really painful to negotiate. Any chance you can give me information of treatments or procedures that you went through. The consultants are saying that full knee replacements are the only option. I have looked at Prolotherapy, but this seems to be more repair of muscles and cartilage, which you need to have cartilage first. Grafting appears to also be out as again you need to have something to graft too. I have also read about cartilage replacement, using cadavers. However in the UK the NHS is not the most forward thinking organization. At age 43, she is too young for replacements, as I believe they would wear out too quickly, due to the amount of movement she would do. The average knee replacement seem to only last a maximum of 10 years, and you can only have it done twice. We appear to be running out of options, but am trying to resist replacements.

Why I Am No Longer Going To Be Using "Plant Medicines": Part 1

Why I Am No Longer Going To Be Using "Plant Medicines": Part 1

https://bengreenfieldlife.com/plantmedpart1 On June 1, 2022, I reached one of the most important conclusions and subsequently made one of the most important decisions of my life. I decided to completely stop using, endorsing, encouraging, extolling, promoting, praising, or otherwise having any involvement with so-called "plant medicines." Now, before you roll your eyes and stop reading because perhaps you were never interested in plant medicines in the first place, or you think I must have had some kind of a "bad trip" on shrooms, or you're convinced that plant medicines play a vastly important role in your own personal, spiritual, or professional development and there's no way you'd ever come to the same conclusion I recently have... ...I beg of you: please stick with me here. Please hear me out. I have some very important things to say that I think the world desperately needs to hear right now. After a great deal of studying up on the topic (and, over the past decade, experimenting with nearly every plant medicine substance known to humankind) I strongly feel that it is now my responsibility and God-given calling to share my newest thoughts with you on this matter. Frankly, there is absolutely no way I want to go to the grave without speaking my mind on this topic. And yes - I realize that a few of you might be cringing because, deep down inside, you suspect that I'm about to expose the "noble and laudable" excuse of "healing yourself" with plant medicines that a shockingly high number of health enthusiasts and spiritual warriors and shaman-bro's and sis's engage in on a frequent basis... ...as just an excuse to get high and do drugs without feeling like an addict. You'd be right if that's your suspicion. Admittedly, I'm partially responsible for fueling this entire movement. I've podcasted and written multiple times on the benefits of journeying with plant medicines. I've heavily promoted microdosing with plant medicines for focus, creativity, productivity, and social outings. I've equated cannabis and shrooms with coffee and wine (trust me, they're a bit different). I own multiple investments (several of which I'll be exiting, by the way) in ketamine clinics, cannabis companies, and psilocybin research laboratories. I've encouraged couples—in the same way that my wife and I have done—to consider compounds like sassafras, MDMA, ketamine, lysergamides, and beyond for enhancing sex or having highly bonding weekend getaways. Perhaps most interestingly, I have derived a great deal of benefit and personal insight and relationship enhancement and creative ideas from "journeying" with plant medicine, which made what I am about to share with you very difficult to write. Frankly, I thought because all the fruits of my use of plant medicines were nothing but good, that the ends justified the means. But I was wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. I am sorry. I am ashamed. I have severely missed the mark. I was playing with fire, and you might be too.  And I am about to tell you why. Read the entire article at https://bengreenfieldlife.com/plantmedpart1 In this episode, you'll hear: -Plant medicines defined...10:11 -Why I am done with plant medicines...17:35 -The Bible: Obstacle to the evolution...32:08 -The horrific effects of drug abuse...37:30 -I was deceived and I was playing with fire...42:35 -Freedom from bondage...46:45 -Summary of Part 1...52:25 Episode sponsors: -Tru Kava -Inside Tracker -Chili Technologies -Kion Aminos https://bengreenfieldlife.com/plantmed1See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How To Fast Track Your Way To Optimized Brain Fitness (& Instantly Lull Yourself Into Hypnosis, Sleep, Energy, Meditation & Much More!) With Dr. Patrick Porter Of BrainTap.

BenGreenfieldLife.com/BrainTapPodcast This light-sound stimulation machine called the BrainTap is my latest infatuation. Ever since the CEO gave me a trial unit at a health conference this past Spring, I've literally been using it every day for the past four months, and it has been a huge game changer for rapid sleep onset, napping, meditation, airplane/car rides, fast-tracked meditation and much more. "BrainTapping" is a quick and easy way to optimize your brain’s peak potential—anytime, anywhere. Backed by neuroscience and research, BrainTap is proven to help people who experience high stress, difficulty sleeping, low energy, and other lifestyle challenges. BrainTap restores your ability, balance and energy. BrainTap breaks through the overwhelm and makes it possible for you to thrive in overdrive. Instead of feeling exhausted and disheartened, you have a fit and resilient brain with clear, focused thinking, and the confidence to make better choices. The BrainTap device uses light and sound stimulation to create a symphony of brainwave activity, a feeling of calm focus that’s just right for learning and productivity. Each session is designed with brainwave balance in mind. BrainTap’s exclusive neuro-algorithms gently and naturally guide your brain through a broad range of brainwave patterns, instead of just the Alpha state. The result is a complete spectrum of brainwave activity. In addition to the sonic effect in the audio-sessions, the BrainTap Headset delivers gentle light pulses that travel through the ear meridians and the retina, sending direct signals to the brain and guiding you into extraordinary brain states that would otherwise take years of disciplined effort to achieve. Ben Greenfield's Favorite Workouts, Building a Generational Legacy, Biohacking On a Budget, & Much More: Part 2 of Ben's Talk at the Health Optimisation Summit.

Ben Greenfield's Favorite Workouts, Building a Generational Legacy, Biohacking On a Budget, & Much More: Part 2 of Ben's Talk at the Health Optimisation Summit.

BenGreenfieldLife.com/hospodcast2 Today's episode is Part 2 of my talk at the Health Optimisation Summit, recently held in London by noted UK biohacker and media personality Tim Gray. The Health Optimisation Summit brings together the best from all the key diets, and everything in the health, wellbeing, medical, nutrition, biohacking, and fitness worlds, with the view not to push one mindset, but to incorporate them all with the sole goal of making people healthier–using whichever mindset or 'diet' is best for the individual. When I interviewed Tim Gray recently, on the podcast episode "How UK’s Leading Biohacker Eats, Drinks, & Optimizes His Life: An Interview With Tim Gray," I got a sneak peek into what his life looks like, from his fitness and nutrition routines to his sexiest biohacks. At this year's Summit, Tim turned the tables and actually asked me to present on "A Day in the Life of Ben Greenfield." At first, I thought I'd be struggling to fill the time slot with just my "average day," but then as I thought about all the hacks, routines, and rituals I do throughout my days that are now more or less automatic for me but likely something you'll be quite interested in, I realized it might not be quite as simple as it sounds! In this episode, we pick up where we left off last time, and go on to talk about the importance of family time at the end of the day, finishing the day with purpose, and we even had time left at the end to answer a few questions from members of the audience. Remember, if you haven't yet, I highly recommend you listen to Part 1 of this series, either before or after this episode! In this episode, you'll discover: -How Ben makes the most of the mid-day siesta... -Ben's favorite workouts throughout the day... -Building a family legacy... -Eating practices at the end of the day... -Bedtime rituals... -And much more! The Nitty-Gritty Details Of Ben Greenfield's Daily Routine, How To Optimize Your Workspace, The Latest Biohacking Secrets, Superfood Smoothies & Much More: Part 1 of Ben's Talk at the Health Optimisation Summit.

The Nitty-Gritty Details Of Ben Greenfield's Daily Routine, How To Optimize Your Workspace, The Latest Biohacking Secrets, Superfood Smoothies & Much More: Part 1 of Ben's Talk at the Health Optimisation Summit.

BenGreenfieldLife.com/hospodcast1 Here, for your itching ears and supremely curious heart and mind, comes Part 1 of my talk at the Health Optimisation Summit, recently held in London by my friend and podcast guest, Tim Gray. The Health Optimisation Summit is Europe’s largest health conference, showcasing the best speakers from the health, biohacking, fitness, longevity, nutrition, functional, and preventative medicine spaces (including yours truly) in order to provide people with the knowledge, tools, and resources to take their own health and performance to the next level. The UK's leading biohacker, Tim Gray is known for his detailed tracking of more than 35+ biomarkers per day, is frequently in the mainstream media regarding practical, trackable, and immediately apply-able health hacks, and is featured on over 30 podcasts a year. As a psychology specialist and a successful businessman, Tim founded and invested in multiple 6-figure businesses, including digital marketing agencies and London’s first private Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic. After years spent self-healing his body from chronic health conditions through biohacking alone, Tim Gray embarked on a mission to educate and empower the masses. Recently, I spoke to Tim about his history, his routines, the Health Optimisation Summit, and plenty more, in a special two-part podcast episode that included an interview and then a follow-up solosode by Tim ("How UK’s Leading Biohacker Eats, Drinks, & Optimizes His Life: An Interview With Tim Gray"). For this year's Summit, Tim actually asked me to present on "A Day in the Life of Ben Greenfield." At first, I thought I'd be struggling to fill the time slot with just my "average day," but then as I thought about all the hacks, routines, and rituals I do throughout my days that are now more or less automatic for me but likely something you'll be quite interested in, I realized it might not be quite as simple as it sounds! In fact, like I needed to do with Tim's podcast, I had to split my talk up and finish presenting about a "typical" day in Part 2, which is the next episode you'll see released on the podcast feed. You can also go here to get all of the resources from my talk at the Summit. Enjoy! In this episode, you'll discover: -Look at the body as a battery... -Ben's morning routine... -Family time in the morning and the morning smoothie... -How Ben optimizes his workspace... -Midday routines and rituals... -Audience question: "What does your wife do?"...
