About the author Davidson Loehr has always been a heretic. When he was six, his Sunday School teacher told the class a new story. It was called, as he heard it, “Trinadee.” He didn’t mind the God in the sky—Superman and Captain Marvel were up there, so there could be room for gods, too. And the god had a son—well, this is fine, too. Especially since they had a poster of this blue-eyed, brown-haired son right on their Sunday School wall, with a lot of little kids gathered around him. But then the teacher said there was this ghost. The only image of a ghost Davidson had was Caspar. Now Superman and Captain Marvel are one thing, but Caspar the Friendly Ghost was just silly. So when the teacher asked if they “understood” this Trinadee story, he told her that it wasn’t a bad story—though not one of the best they’d heard—but next time, lose the ghost. The teacher got angry, and enlisted the rest of the class to agree that they liked the story, ghost and all. Then she said “You know, Jesus doesn’t like little boys who don’t like this story!” “Well then,” Davidson said, “You can lose Jesus, too.” He was through with religion that day, until he heard an honest preacher fifteen years later: a Unitarian minister named John Wolf, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here, he found religion that was honest, relevant, and profoundly challenging. A few months later, in January 1964, Davidson enlisted in the Army and was soon sent to Germany, where he attended a tough NCO Academy. He returned to the states the following year, and attended artillery officer candidate school. Later he was sent to Vietnam as a Lieutenant. There, he first served as The Vietnam Entertainment Officer, handling all the USO-sponsored shows and entertainers. All told, Davidson spent nearly four years in the military.

It prefers a feel-good, do-good gospel instead of the genuine gospel of Jesus and his apostles. It seeks power, prestige, and the love of the world. In the book, the author reveals that this rogue, materialistic, unjust, and unrighteous Christian church is the instrument of Satan, part of the false religion that will usher the days of the Antichrist. As its members infiltrate the true church, this book is a call reminding the true Christian to take a stand for justice and righteousness, to be sanctified, and to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit. This is the story of two very different armies, and their equally different commanders. The Union Army of the Cumberland, led by the charismatic, but excitable William Starke Rosecrans against the Confederate Army of Tennessee, and its hot-tempered and irascible commander; Braxton Bragg. As 1862 ends, and the birth of a new year of the war looms on the horizon, an end to the bloodletting is nowhere in sight. It was a year that had just seen the April horrific fight at Shiloh, the incredible ineptness of McClellan in the Peninsula /Seven Days Campaign, the September bloodbath known as Antietam, and President Lincoln’s launch of a huge gamble in the Emancipation Proclamation, all followed by the near disaster for the Union at Fredericksburg. It would be followed by a year that would see death, destruction, and a level of ferocity in warfare on a scale never before seen on the American continent. Of all the major battles of the Civil War, Stones River had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides. Although the battle itself was inconclusive, the Union Army’s repulse of two Confederate attacks and the subsequent Confederate withdrawal were a much-needed boost to Union morale after the defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg. It dashed Confederate aspirations for control of Middle Tennessee. Names such as the Dragons Teeth, Slaughter Pen, the Round Forest, and the Orphans Brigade would enter the American lexicon. The battle was very important to Union morale, as evidenced by Abraham Lincoln’s letter to General Rosecrans: “You gave us a hard-earned victory, which had there been a defeat instead, the nation could scarcely have lived over.” The Confederate threat to Kentucky and Middle Tennessee was gone, and Nashville was secure as a major Union supply base for the rest of the war.
