Paramount Announces R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie, 'The Last Ronin'

Paramount Pictures is taking the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise into bold new territory with an R-rated live-action movie adaptation of 'The Last Ronin', as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. This latest project, which is drawing from the darker and more mature themes of the original IDW comics, is under the guidance of former DC Studios head Walter Hamada and his production company, 18hz.

'The Last Ronin' is set in a dystopian future where all but one of the Ninja Turtles have died, presenting a solitary and battle-hardened survivor navigating a grim world. This adaptation is inspired by works like God of War, showcasing a stark departure from the often light-hearted and family-friendly tone the series is known for.

Screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith, known for his work on 'Boy Kills World' and the 'Child's Play' reboot, is crafting the script. The story is based on an original 1987 outline by TMNT creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who also penned the comic series first released in 2020. Their involvement suggests a faithful yet fresh interpretation of their much-loved characters.

With an R-rating, the film promises to delve into the more violent and serious aspects of the Ninja Turtles saga, addressing long-standing challenges of portraying the turtles' weaponry realistically within the constraints of more family-oriented ratings. Fans can expect a darker, more intense cinematic experience that honors the original vision of Eastman and Laird.
