If you've been listening in for a while you understand the idea behind ZKVMs and where we see them fitting into the modular stack. ZKVMs, from what we understand, are mostly focused on proof generation. However, a lesser known part of the ZK "magic" is directly verifying ZK proofs. We're interested in teams lowering the cost and time to verify. So, we sat down with Rob and John of zkVerify to discuss their dedicated blockchain for verifying ZK proofs, significantly reducing the costs and stabilizing the pricing of verification. We discussed the need to support different types of cryptography, why offering product developers the flexibility they need to create innovative applications in ZK is important, and proof aggregation. We also talked about how they settle proofs and whether or not its truly decentralized and trust-minimized. The idea behind integrating with multiple proof systems also came up as we discussed their plans to include Ethereum, Apechain, and Horizon's Eon within their proof verification system. A problem we've been fiddling with in the interoperability landscape is this idea behind achieving maximum extensibility with regards to the creation of hundreds of new chains. We know that if there's going to be an overwhelming amount of chains, we need solutions that are permissionless and easy to spin up on new chains. For today's podcast, we sat down with Catalyst CTO Alexander, to discuss this situation and more. We talked about the concept of the unit of liquidity, which enables asynchronous asset swaps between different pools on different chains. We went on to discuss the best way to tackle the N-squared problem in which traditional cross-chain solutions require each chain to know the state of every other chain. We went on to talk about the idea of logic-dependent swaps, which allow for condition-based transactions. These swaps can be set to execute only if specific conditions are met, opening up novel use cases for onchain users. Catalyst is already live on the mainnet with three OP stack chains: Blast, OP, and Base, with plans to extend to more ecosystems over time. As the cross-chain landscape continues to evolve, with more app-specific chains emerging, Catalyst is aiming to solve this extensibility dilemma to address the challenges of scaling horizontally, in an interoperable way. There's quite a bit of conversation ongoing in the zeitgest of the modular research community. We tend to lean into technical topics more than the flavor of the day, but for this episode we managed to do both. We were joined by Alejo Pinto, one of the founders of Lumio, to discuss their modular VM abstraction framework, enabling developers to build and deploy apps everywhere, as well as the state of sequencing and composability in the space. Lumio supports popular VMs like SVM, Move VM, and Parallel EVM, enabling applications to be deployed across various execution environments. This framework is designed to simplify life for devs by maintaining full compatibility with these VMs without requiring any code changes, thus promoting a "build-once-deploy-anywhere" philosophy. This is pretty aligned with the modular thesis of build whatever, as well as a core pillar, optionality. During our conversation with Alejo, we also touched on the hot topic of composability. Alejo shared his views on the debate between synchronous atomic composability and asynchronous environments, highlighting the tradeoffs between having a single global state machine like Solana versus a modularized scaling system. One significant aspect of Lumio's work is its approach to shared and decentralized sequencers. Alejo emphasized the role of shared sequencing in optimizing crosschain messaging and contract calls, and highlighted the ongoing research and development in this area with projects like Espresso. The C.A.K.E framework established that chain abstraction is a collaborative effort, and not a one winner takes all situation. This idea for how the intents and chain abstraction stack works was originally created by Frontier Research and now there is a C.A.K.E working group. Since then, they have also spun off a new project called OneBalance focusing on credible accounts and achieving the chain abstraction experience. We were joined by Stephane, an ex-Flashbots team, and now leading the OneBalance team. We talked about their focus on developing a chain abstracted stack via credible accounts and resource locks. These innovations prevent double-spending and make secure cross-chain messaging possible without the need to lock assets on the source chain. Collaboration is at the heart of OneBalance's mission, along with other chain abstraction contributors. Rather than replacing existing wallet infrastructure like MetaMask or Rabby, OneBalance aims to integrate its credible account capabilities into them to make the transition for users easier. We asked how Stephane sees OneBalance getting traction and what the process would be like for active users to switch to their solution. We also discussed the role that solver networks play in the chain abstraction ecosystem, executing transactions on behalf of users and ensuring fast fills. We discussed the permissionless access, speed, and price optimization properties of solver networks, which allows them to tackle the "order flow trilemma". We also talked about MEV and local consensus towards the end, and uncovered a bold thesis from Stephane...His vision? Every validator and user account to operate as its own rollup.
